HOLMGREN AGREES TO JOIN BROWNS

The Cleveland Browns announced today that Mike Holmgren has agreed to become club President. The team also has announced that Mike Keenan will transition to the role of Chief Financial Officer.

"We are pleased to announce that Mike Holmgren has agreed to join the Cleveland Browns," said Owner Randy Lerner. "We will spend the rest of the week finalizing the details of the agreement and will make a formal announcement next week, at which time we will make him available to the media."

Bill Walsh coaching tree meets Bill Belichick coaching tree. Has that ever happened before? (Probably, but I can't recall off hand).

Interestingly, a lot of folks are standing up for Mangenius these days. Peter King reported the following:

"Because everything in Cleveland is so politically charged right now -- with two friends of Mike Holmgren telling me over the weekend they expect him to take the czar job after turning down a late rush from the Seahawks Saturday -- and Mangini's future in doubt, you have to take everything players and coaches say there cautiously. But the Browns have looked lively and breakneck in the last two games, beating two suspect teams, Pittsburgh and Kansas City (and that's putting it kindly in the case of the Chiefs).

With that as a backdrop, I asked Cribbs Sunday after the game: If you polled all the players on the team, what would be the vote on whether to keep or get rid of Mangini? 'I think it'd be unanimous,' Cribbs said. 'I think the guys would definitely want to keep him.' You can't judge coach Mangini on one year. The camaraderie in the locker room is great. You hear things in the media about coach Mangini being too tough on us. But I think we're building something here, and I think the players are behind him.''

Former Cleveland great Jim Brown, an executive advisor to Browns owner Randy Lerner, has also come out in support of Mangini being given a second year.

Mangini may have saved his job with the team looking good lately and should win this weekend against another hot team as of late...the Raiders.

not very sure whats that big deal with holmgren . he is not parcells in terms of evaluation by a long shot IMO.Yes he went to 3 SB and transformed green bay but dont know if heis like parcells.

I see Holmgren bringing in his own man to coach who he is more comfortable with.
While Holmgren is a good coach, he is no miracle worker. Good luck to him.
It would be nice to see the Browns be able to contend with the Squeelers once in this century.

Well, Mangini won't have the lion's share of the say in buying the groceries. I will say that Holmgren did a good job in Seattle, outside of the Branch trade.. He got some good talent up there. Including taking a huge leap on Lofa Tatupu..

It will be interesting to see if he's willing to do that sort of thing with Mangini...

No, but Shanahan and Holmgren were both products of the Bill Walsh coaching tree.

Shanahan become OC to George Seifert (Walsh's former DC and successor when Walsh retired) from 1992-1994, before taking over as coach of the Broncos in 1995. He had briefly served as HC of the Raiders in 1988-1989, and as an assistant in various capacities (including OC) under Dan Reeves.

Holmgren was the 49ers QB coach from 1986-1988, and then OC from 1989-1991. He become HC of the Packers in 1992, so Shanahan succeeded Holmgren as OC of the 49ers.

I can't see Shanahan coming to work for Holmgren. They're too big to co-existent, especially in a town as small as Cleveland. Much more likely that Shanahan takes the Washington job with a friendly GM, where he'll be the big name in town.

Holmgren isn't going to be swayed by any sentimentality over two back to back wins - including one over that juggernaut of a Chiefs team in which the defensive Mangenius allowed KC to score 34 points - bailed out thanks to 203 yards in kickoff returns for 2 TDs.

Holmgren will want a West Coast offense with a WC offensive minded coach and a WC offensive minded QB.

More than anyting Holmgren will want 100% credit for turning this historic franchise around... no sharing credit with Lerner for brining in Mangini.

Regarding the Rat

I can't imagine that this hasn't already been worked out, one way or the other, so what happens for the rest of the season doesn't matter. I think there's no way that Holmgren takes this job without being able to call the shots for HC and every other key job.

The Mangenius is enough of a known commodity that Holmgren already has a view on him, so the decision has been made. If anyone has any insight into what Holmgren thinks about Mangini, that's probably the most important information we could have. I don't have any.

Remembered most, but to be honest I double checked my facts before posting. I wasn't sure whether they had overlapped on SF's coaching staff, though I didn't think Shanahan had ever worked directly for Holmgren.
