How much difference is there between Oher and Beatty? Given who picks above us and their needs I can see him falling to 18-20 range

Would he be worth moving up for and immediately challenge Kazcur at RT?

With all the picks we have and the likelihood we'll be back down at 25-32 next year should we trying for a franchise tackle in the first rather than the OLB (Barwin) lots of people seem to crave? - esp if we get Jason Taylor and the need isn't immediate? Pick up an OLB in the 2nd?

I was thinking about posting a Beatty vs. Britton thread, so if anyone has thougths on that comparison as well, I'd be interested.

Oher has played against better competiton than Beatty. It's unfortunate, but Oher has been overanalyzed. He is the better player right now, but I think the ceiling for Beatty is higher. Beatty needs to get stronger but he has unique quickness that will alow him to be a dominant LT at someoint down the road.

I would strongly consider Beatty with the 23rd pick.

As much as I would love to see the Pats draft an impact OLB at 23, I'd rather see a true LT who can anchor the line for the next 8 years or so. I've never liked Kazcur's game and would welcome the possibility of moving Light to RT and bringing in a new LT.

Thats my thoughts too and given the strength of our position this year im wondering if this isnt our chance to snag someone now. If Beatty is good enough then I would rank him above Barwin at #23 in terms of long term team need - just not sure if or how much better Oher is

Beatty vs. Britton has been hammered to death. See:

Poor Nick Kaczur, the kid can't catch a break here. Does anyone recall where the team was when he was drafted #100 overall? Yep, just off winning three Super Bowls in four years with Brandon Gorin and Tom Ashworth and similar RTs developed in the Scarnecchia laboratory. NE drafted a LT at the end of Day One which prompted a few cuss words in draft war rooms around the league as they lost out to NE, again (there were articles to that point).

It's always interesting to read the discussions talking about moving Light to RT and pushing Kaczur down the roster. Many of the complaints fans have about Kaczur have been applied to Light for the past eight years, and any that have died down would resurface rapidly as Light struggles to overcome the muscle memory of a career LT. Light and Kaczur are bookends, similar players in many respects, and players who have started all but a few games in their Pro careers. This would seem to indicate a couple things, to me at least: 1. Scarnecchia trusts them to play at a consistent NFL starter's level and execute the blocking scheme correctly; 2. Scarnecchia and Belichick trust them with the Franchise (it's not as if Brady suddenly became valuable in the last couple years, he had proven his worth by the time Kaczur was drafted and Light was extended).

What do we know about Beatty, Oher, and Britton? We know two of the three (Beatty & Oher) are inconsistent performers, long term starters who don't bring their "A" game every down. That right there is enough to question them as first round picks for NE. The second caution flag for both Beatty and Oher is passion, both appear to be nice young men, neither has been painted with that onfield application of "nasty" so desired by Scarnecchia and other top OL coaches. Of the three Tackles being discussed, Britton is the more consistent and the one closest in nature to Scarnecchia's "nasty." If people truly believe it's time to replace Kaczur, Britton is the more promising prospect.

Myself, I don't see Coach Belichick spending the high round pick to replace what he currently has with Light and Kaczur. I think it's more likely he drafts another 3-4 year starter later in the draft, and lets them battle it out with O'Callaghan, Britt, and LeVoir. With a draft class as deep as this one, I can see him picking up another good kid in the late rounds or as a UDFA to groom on the Practice Squad, and if he doesn't do it around draft time, he'll grab someone off waivers after final cutdown.

I don't believe I've ever bashed Kaczur. I think he's solid, but upgradeable. His biggest plus to me is his versatility, being able to play both LT and RT and probably guard. T.J. Lang reminds me a bit of Kaczur, and I had us taking him at #97 in my last mock.

Whatever Kaczur's flaws, comparing him to Ashworth and Gorin is a low blow. He is clearly a big upgrade over those guys. But he will be 30 this year, Neal is aging and injury prone, Light is aging, and I don't think looking at the OL is unreasonable.

I personally don't see Britton as a huge upgrade over Kaczur, so I'm not particularly in favor of spending a high pick on him. I'm with you on Oher's inconsistency being a concern, and he's not on my board. I'm not sold on Beatty's inconsistency being a real issue. According to his coach at Connecticut, he responded well to being pushed. He's a good character kid (son of 2 pastors, no trouble history at all). He's showed good progress this past year, and in the pre-draft season putting on weight and increasing his strength (up to 30 reps on the bench press at his combine, 2nd only to Jason Smith among top prospects). He's by no means risk-free, but I think the chance to get a top LT is worth taking some risk.

Totally agree. I see no reason to draft an early round OT.

There is no need to upgrade at RT, it's not a big value position. Kaczur is just fine, an average, but starting quality RT at a bargain salary.

I think if any offensive lineman is likely to be replaced it would be Light or Koppen, just because of age and salary concerns.
