Trades:
- Matt Cassel and 2(47) traded to KC for 1(3) and 2(34)
- 1(3) traded to Cleveland for 1(5) and 2010 2nd round pick. Cleveland gives up a pick to move up and get Aaron Curry.
- Trade 3(89) + 4(122) for 3(78).
1(5) BJ Raji, DT, Boston College (6). Curry is great, but is probably an ILB in the Pats 3-4, and #3 is just too much to spend. Pats move back and get a beast DT as insurance for Wilfork/Seymour leaving after 2009, and to complement them on the DL. Seymour-Wilfork-Raji-Green would be an amazing line. Raji could also play some DE similar to Haloti Ngata.
2(34) Sean Smith, CB/S, Utah (35). Would also seriously consider William Beatty (34) here, but the secondary is a bigger need. Smith has great athletic upside and versatility. A slight trade up for Clay Matthews (27) would also be an option.
2(58) Connor Barwin, DE/LB, Cincinnati (63). Athletic, versatile, intelligent player in the mold of Mike Vrabel who could probably play either inside or outside at LB, and some TE in the red zone as well. Louis Delmas (64) would also get strong consideration here if we went with Beatty or Matthews (with a trade up) instead of Smith at #34.
3(78) Eric Wood, C/G, Louisville (78). Tough, versatile player who could upgrade Koppen and back up the interior line. Jason Watkins, OT, Florida (86) would also be an option. Athletic former TE Could also go for Cody Brown (87) at this pick if we thought that either he or Barwin could move inside to SILB, with the other at OLB.
3(97) Trevor Canfield, OG, Cincinnati (102). Nasty interior lineman to backup and eventually replace Stephen Neal, or insurance if we can't resign Mankins.
4(135) Sammie Lee Hill, DT, Spillman (150). Versatile huge guy who can play DT or DE. Even with Raji in the 1st, Hill would still provide great value and versatility on the DL.
5(158) Devin Moore, RB, Wyoming (181). Versatile all-purpose player in the mold of Darrin Sproles. Eventual replacement for Kevin Fault.
5(167) Kevin Huber, P, Cincinnati (182). Accurate kicker with great hang time and ability to pin opponents inside their 20.
