The spike to stop the clock on 1st down is a fossil leftover from an earlier era in the NFL when teams weren't all capable of running a hurry-up offense. At this point, there isn't any reason for teams to not have a prescribed 1st-down play schemed into their 2-minute offense each week.

Or just take a quick shot at the end zone, or fake the spike and throw a quick pass or just about anything beats completely wasting a play, especially with that much time on the clock its such a waste.

That I admit is probably why Dungy didn't do it -- he's too used to putting the ball in Manning's hands not his defense. But his defense, Sanders and Feeney in particular, has at times shown a knack for the big play when it count, a sack could basically end the game.

And now he must depend on his defense in OT.

If only they had a rule that if neither team could win in overtime, the seventh team in the conference gets their spot instead.

Actually, as I said in another thread, in a perfect world, this is the point where the aliens would come and abduct both teams for the next year or so, and, ahem, "experiment" on them (in an Eric Cartman kind of way ).

this is why they never win big games. Too many self proclaimers. i dont trust them at all with the ball right now
