i think it depends how many 11-5 teams end up in the end. i wouldnt be surprised if either 2 or all 3 of the afc east teams dont end up 11-5 including the pats.

Me, I would be completely shocked because such a result would completely overthrow mathematics as we know it.

well..maybe pats/fins/jets all lose another game before the last game so it isnt impossible ..right ?

apparently mangini is changing up things for the seattle trip
Albert Einstein is credited with defining insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

So Eric Mangini, thought to be a genius in his own right until three Friday charters for Sunday games on the West Coast have turned into three miserable defeats, is about to order up next week's plane to Seattle for Saturday.

"Yeah, it's a big chance," he said. "I don't see the value in doing it the other way."

*

Jet wideouts caught two passes in San Francisco for a total of 15 yards, but according to Mangini, the problem with the passing game started with tight end Dustin Keller's drop on the game's first possession.

"We have the third-and-two and drop it," said the coach. "You're talking about being on the 35-yard line, so get a few yards in field-goal range and who knows?"

*

Mangini on the Laveranues Coles Laveranues Coles conference-call interview with Bay Area media that was turned by just one author into a Coles problem with Brett Favre:

"I read that whole transcript and think those were very selective comments," said the coach.

*

The wild fourth-quarter kickoff return lateral by Brad Smith Brad Smith that backed the Jets New York Jets to the 1-yard line was not an ill-advised improvisation, just bad execution. "There would [have been] just one contain defender on the back side," said Mangini. "We had a really good opportunity we missed."

I think it's actually a fair point. The poster is saying that 18 years of experience suggest that the odds are signficant that 11--5 will get you into the Playoffs; that so large an experience (data) base levels out the variables represented by "different times...teams...rules." While it's purely academic and very theoretical, I think that it is a valid way to look at it. For the last 18 years, 12 playoff spots have been at stake at the end of the regular season (216 spots in total) and it has never happened that an 11--5 team missed out on one of them. That's not insignificant. It's clearly not predictive, but it is highly indicative.

Of course that cuts both ways; either one of the other teams (Jets, Dolphins, Colts or Ravens) will end up at 10--6 or the Pats will make the point moot by losing a game themselves.

Exactly. The field will even itself out. Everyone is penciling in wins for teams, thinking there might be two 11-5 teams in the AFC East, but everyone was penciling in the Jets for wins vs. Denver & SF. It's probably more likely that the winner of the AFC East will be 10-6 and the two remaining teams will be 9-7. That's why the Pats just need to hunker down and win out and history strongly suggests that 11-5 will yield a trip to the playoffs.

It is impossible.

ALL lose a game means 10-6, NOT 11-5 as stated

All are at 8-5 today

Any loss prevents an 11-5 finish

Jets play the Phins

There cannot be a 3 team tie at 11-5

Q,E.D.

I just do not trust the Jets but who knows if they can right the ship in crunch time.

I trust the Dolphins and Pats much more to take care of business.

Kurt Warner is not a very good cold weather quarterback from what I remember. Maybe I'm wrong.

I think New England beats the Cards.

I also think Miami loses one two SF or KC, and the Jets drop one at Seattle.

I totally agree

Miami losing to the niners seems to be a hot pick. So now I don't think it will happen. Gore may not play either.

Chiefs? Seriously? Herm will find a way to blow it and yes they play hard but they are pretty bad.

i meant its possible neither of the 3 teams left reach the 11-5 mark

Wow, untill you reposted what you wrote I read it as 2 to 3 could be 11-5,, funny how the mind works, you stated it plain as day and I took the opposite meaning.

This a great football board and I am just happy to be a part of it.

I learn alot here, and I do not mind if some use me as there whipping post, it's like I am on a temporary Visa and do not want to be deported.

I suppose you have a Green card?

I can't believe that I yet again failed reading comprehension 1.0

well now dilfer picks us to win

what year was this?

that sounds absurd.

I'm not saying that you're wrong, but, that's just crazy.

1985, however there was only 2 wild cards allowed at the time.. The jets , pats , and denver had a chance to make the playoffs that last week, jets beat the browns, Pats beat the bengals, and I forgot who denver played could be seattle. But I guess the conference record, Pats had 4 losses in the afc , jets had 3, and I think all of denver's losses were in the conferece.. All ended up 11-5 , Denver lost out... sounds a little to erie about this weekend..

At least Terrel Davis picked us since week 3 and hasn't switched since.
