HI, my name is scout. I am a bandwagon fan. Hi Scout (crowd).
Just read where the Bruins traded a prospect and two high draft picks for a defenseman who will be a free agent soon. Wow, I'm thinking this guy might be pretty good. I'm also thinking that this might put the Bruins up there as a serious contender. Any hockey fans that can give me the lowdown, would be appreciated.

I was going to post a thread on it ... but I couldn't find the proper words to express myself. Well ... if we score more on the power play then ... if we don't then .
Seriously ... if we resign him for a few more years then it was a good trade. Getting Recchi off the power play can only help. Kaberle feeding pucks to Chara .... .

I think that the bruins trades over the past week are going to help tremendously.....Kelly is a solid hard working center that we got from the Senators for our 2nd round pick in 2011.....I think it was a solid trade.....The big trade for Kaberle will really help us....He is a great puck moving defenseman that paired with chara will do wonders on the power play.....WE gave up OUR 1st round pick in 2011, Joe Colbourne (a good prospect) and a conditional pick that will be a 2nd in 2012 if the bruins make the stanley cup finals....And then you have the Blake wheeler and Mark Stuart trade to Atlanta for Rich Peverley and Boris Valabik....This trade was more just for cap room purposes I believe....All in all I think the bruins did well in these trades and hopefully they lock up kaberle for a couple more seasons and the bruins will remain at the top of the eastern conference....

I just don't follow the Bruins or the NHL anymore, but, to give up your #1 pick and a conditional #2, for an impending free agent is huge. Where does this new guy rank in the league for a defenseman?
I was going to start a thread about this deal. My title was going to be:
It's called Bruins!
Don't get me wrong, I do like the players they brought in, but wow did they overpay for them. Seriously, a first, two 2nd's, and your top prospect in Joe Colbourne for 25 games of Tomas Kaberle, and an overpaid 3rd line center? That's like paying $20 for a Whopper combo. The Whopper always tastes good, so it's not a matter of the product, it's just that you paid too damn much for it. Especially if it gives you diarea when the playoffs roll around. At any rate, Kelly is a slightly more offensive version of Greg Campell. Good solid two way guy, but basically a 15 goal scorer. He's a 3rd line center. An overpaid one at that. Kaberle is a terrific puck moving defenseman who is exactly what the team needed. He's who they thought Dennis Wideman would one day be. All in all, I like the players aquired, but I hate the compensation paid. They overpaid and there is no way to deny that.
If they somehow manage to resign Kaberle then the compensation won't be that bad. If they get 3+ years out of Kaberle then my opinion will change. The problem though, is that Chiarelli is clueless when it comes to handing out contracts. He truly overpays for players. Add up the guys he's overpaid by $500k-$1 million per, and you could add a $4-5 million player to the roster, which is what this team still needs. They still need a wing that can score if they are going to go deep into the playoffs. If not a scoring wing, then an offensively gifted player that can create chances. Someone like Alexi Kovalev comes to mind. He might not be on the same defensive page as the Claude, but he can handle the puck and create both possession and chances in the offensive end.

I don't disagree that we overpayed for these players BUT....If you look at what we got for kessel plus we still have Toronto's first round pick in 2011 then I think it balances out these trades a little more....The bruins remind me of the Pats in the sense that they have a ton of solid young guys with some good veterans like chara that are locked up so they wouldn't be able to use all of their draft picks anyways so why not go for it.....In me liking the trade I am banking on them resigning kaberle for around 2-3 more years.....
I like the trades less than most. I don't think Kaberle has that much left in the tank, although I do believe we will re-sign him. But the fact is that to get 20-something games plus playoffs out of him, we gave up our top young C prospect, a first round pick, another possible pick (I've heard - not confirmed - that if we don't re-sign Kaberle or make the finals, we still owe Toronto a 3rd), aand two young solid players in Stuart and Wheeler (although I don't think Wheeler was coming back next year).
That's a big haul. The guys we got back from Atlanta aren't much besides cheap. Peverly is a quasi-useful third-line type defensive forward, the Russian guy I've never heard of before, but checking his stats he seems to be a longshot to ever be a productive NHLer.
Seriously, it seems Chiarelli made a deal for the sake of making a deal. I think he's risking his job on this trade. I still can't get over the fact that in the past six months he's traded the only two puck-moving defensemen on the NHL roster (Wideman, Hunwick), and left himself in the position of having to overpay for one during the stretch run.
That's just piss-poor planning for a supposed astute hockey mind. I will give him credit for acquiring draft picks and drafting young talent than makes trades like this possible without devastating the farm system.

Chiarelli leaves a lot to be desired. He kind of backed into the Seguin aquisition since he was set to ship Kessel to Toronto the year earlier for their then top 10 pick. Burke really gave Chiarelli Seguin, and I'm sure neither party thought the Leafs would be one of the worst teams in the league before the compensation was paid. So ignoring that deal for a minute, what has Chiarelli really done? Overpaid for Ryder. Overpaid for Chara. Overpaid for Lucic. Overpaid for Thomas. Overpaid for Ferrence. Overpaid for Bergeron. I think you get the point. The one player he didn't overpay for was Savard, and of course his career could potentially be over. He's mismanaged the cap to the point that he had to give Marco Sturm away for nothing. Don't get me wrong, he's made some decent moves too, but overall he hasn't been as good a GM as is needed in the cap era.

I am just curious how he overpayed for lucic? Lucic is an absolute monster that is young and will be a mainstay on the top lines in Boston for a long time....I don't know this but unless we got lucic in the Joe Thornton trade, I can't imagine we overpayed for him....

Because at the time of the signing Lucic wasn't a $4 million per year player. He showed some promise, but he was raw, and hadn't even scored 20 goals. I love Lucic but Chiarelli signed him for $4 million per when he had no business being a $4 million player. He overpaid. Krejci who was by far the more productive player to that point, signed for less than Lucic. In a league with a hard cap like the NHL, you truly need to save as much money on each deal as is humanly possible. When you overpay Lucic by a million per or more 2 years ago, and add it to the varying levels of overpayment for guys like Ryder, Ferrence, Bergeron, Chara, etc. you total up enough coin to sign a solid, bonafied player. MAybe it allows you to keep a player like Sturm on the roster (he's damaged goods but someone like him) which is what this team could use. The cap means that you have to push for home town discounts whenever possible, or play hardball a little bit. Instead, Chiarelli hands out above slot contracts for players that are restricted, and already on the team. The one deal he got right was Savard, and it figures he's probably done for his career.
What's funny about the Bruins is that they were cheap and frugal when there was no cap, and they had chances to win the cup, but now with a spending limitation they're too generous in the contracts they do give out. It's called Bruins! I still love them though. Hockey, like football, is the greatest sport ever created.
