Gretzky wants the NHL to introduce a Bobby Orr trophy

I like Orr getting a trophy named for him but it being for just the highest scoring Dman doesn't recognize the fullness of Orr's talent. The scoring was just a byproduct, merely the best use of the puck he had just taken from you and wasn't giving back.

Agree. Might as well call it the Paul Coffey Award then...and the 2 Coffey won should have gone to Raymond-Jean.

The Norris Trophy encapsulates the essence of what a great defensemen is all about just fine. Leave it alone.

While there's the Hart trophy for MVP, there's also a Ross for leading scorer.

In the same vein then perhaps there's room for not only a Norris but also an Orr.

There's a Selke for best defensive Forward, after all...

What should we call the best fighter award?

The Probert Award?

To have Orr's game become a synonym for scoring defenseman is just flat out wrong, it diminishes Orr's game by half. Gretzky suggesting an Orr Trophy for the highest scoring defenseman is reminiscent of the way he played the game, it only considers half the ice. James Norris was never an NHL player, he was an NHL owner and tremendous contributor to the early NHL community. It's right that the NHL should have a trophy named for him but it shouldn't necessarily be for the 'defensive player who displays the greatest all around ability at the position.' No hockey player ever displayed more all around ability at any position than Orr did. He could beat any opponent in their end, his end, in the neutral zone, on the boards or in an alley if need be. Orr was the very definition of greatest all around hockey ability.

The NHL Foundation Award, currently given to the player "who applies the core values of (ice) hockey -- commitment, perseverance and teamwork -- to enrich the lives of people in his community" should be renamed The James Norris Award and The Orr should be created and given to the NHL's best defenseman..

This is the right way to go.

Derek Sanderson too, pre-WHA...

Al Secord was another, in his all-too-brief time here, before he was Stoopidly traded to Chicago for Mike O'Connell...

Gretsky is just being a class act.

He said that sometimes when he signs that someone will eventually come up to him and state " You're not the great one btw"

Gretsky retorts" You're from Boston aren't you?"

The Hart trophy should be renamed after Gretzky....the guy won 9 of them.

Did Gretsky change how the game is played? He scored goals.

He won 9 out of 10 Hart trophies in the 80s. Orr was the best DEFENSEMAN, but Gretzky was the best overall player.

Could've been from Detroit too...

During the Stanley Cup finals, St Louis put a player on the "defenseman" Orr because of his offensive power (it didn't work).
