MORSE: Notes From Patriots Training Camp Day 5

Some notes from various reports as the Patriots held their first practice in pads.

Attendance

Play of the Day – Kyle Williams outdoes himself with a one-handed TD on the right corner of the end zone, with CB Kindle Vildor in coverage on the throw from Tommy DeVito. Pretty play on a twisting catch and great body control.

Kyle Williams still isn’t seeing run with the top offense, but he hauled in two TDs Thursday. The second was the play of the day so far: a juggling back-shoulder ball from DeVito to beat Charles Woods.

Drake Maye missed on his first pass of 11-on-11s (to Brown vs. Gonzalez) but completed his final eight, including three A.J. Brown touchdowns. Much better day for the Maye-Brown connection.

Tanner Arkin flashed multiple times as a blocker Thursday – Nastiness he played with in college showing up in the pros. Players aren’t tackling to the ground, but hard not to notice how hard Myles Montgomery runs

Another nice day for Eli Raridon. He had a nice catch from Drake Maye and then another from Tommy DeVito. He was interviewed after practice and admitted he is not yet 100% on the playbook but that he much further along than in the Spring. It has been showing on the field.

“Finishing is the biggest key as an offensive lineman,” Lomu told us after the first day in full pads. “Got to be able to know what to do, and then do it with a violent demeanor and be able to finish, finish longer than the guy with the ball, is what we say. …

“You’re going to have those plays where the quarterback back starts to scramble, or the running back switches ways and goes all the way along the field. So you’ve got to be able to strain as long as you can, strain longer than the guy you’re going against, and then being able to finish.” Lomu, in 1 on 1’s had two reps where he put the defender on his back.

Eric Gregory flashed Thursday, making the most of his opportunities. The second-year defender won both of his 1-on-1s against Ben Brown, as charted by Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald, and later also saw some opportunities with the starting defense. All in all, a good day for heaviest D-tackle on New England’s roster.

Campbell was 2-0 in 1-on -1’s against DreMont Jones and Bradyn Swinson

Caleb Lomu was 2-0 in 1-on-1’s where he put the defender on his back. Lomu was in for Moses who took the day off.

UDFA EDGE Xavier Holmes had a nice day and is a player to watch in camp.
