One thing that’s stood out so far through three days is that the Patriots have clearly been addressing areas of need, and that’s exactly what they did again late Saturday with their 196th overall selection in Round 6.
The Patriots used that pick on Texas A&M offensive tackle Dametrious Crownover, adding another tackle on offense to try to replenish their depth.
The team saw Vederian Lowe leave this offseason in free agency, and to this point, hasn’t brought back fellow tackle Thayer Munford. Lowe’s departure was notable primarily because the team really doesn’t have much quality depth behind Will Campbell, with Lowe playing fairly well after having been forced into duty while the rookie tackle missed time due to injury.
Crownover is a big player. He’s listed at 6’7″, 319 pounds, with an arm length listed at 35 3/8″. He’s also pretty athletic for someone his size, having converted from tight end to tackle, and he’s a former basketball player.
While most scouting reports have him as a raw talent, his traits aren’t something you can can coach, which makes him an intriguing addition. He’s essentially someone that Doug Marrone might potentially be able to develop into a contributor for a team that’s relatively thin at that position.
New England selected Utah’s Caleb Lomu in Round 1 Thursday night, with Crownover now joining his fellow rookie as another depth player at tackle. With Morgan Moses heading into what might be his last season, both Lomu and Crownover are now two potential options for the future, and will also push Marcus Bryant and Caedan Wallace later this summer for a role on offense.
The team originally was set to pick at 191st overall prior to taking Crownover, but traded back with Jacksonville for the 196th selection (which they used on Crownover), along with acquiring another pick (245) in Round 7.
They also traded back again with Minnesota at pick #198, moving back to pick 234 (Round 7), and a sixth-round pick in 2027.
