Here’s what New England Patriots tight end Hunter Henry had to say on July 28, 2025
On the fact coach Mike Vrabel said, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Hunter worried,” and his level of consistency:
“Yeah, it means a lot that he would say that. I try to bring that every single day. Try to be the same guy in the building, out here, at home with my wife and kids. It’s hard. It can be hard. I feel like I’m deeply rooted in my faith. That’s something faith in Christ is really keeping me grounded, no matter the circumstances. Highs and lows, I feel like it really keeps me even keel. I’m blessed to be able to have that in my life. Blessed to have some good people around me, too. You’re only as good as the people you have around you. My wife, my family, keep me grounded, keep me level-headed. So, it’s an honor for him to say that, but it’s all the people around me and definitely my faith.”
On if he can remember the last time he was suprised by somerthing on the field:
“There’s definitely things that surprised me, but I learned early on that … I mean, there’s a lot of good football players. There’s a lot of good coaches in this league. This league is a humbling league, and there’s times you’re going to lose reps. There’s times you’re going to not win something. It’s more of a learning opportunity. So trying to snap out of that. I mean, the guys that can snap out of it, get to the next play, because in a game, there might be 70 plays. If I’m hanging on two of those plays, those other 68 are going to be not as good. So trying to move on fast. That’s what we do out here. We’re going to mess up, we’re going to have things go wrong. Trying to snap out of it, get to the next play. We’re all trying to do that on offense, defense, and special teams.”
On Stefon Diggs and what he does for him and the rest of the offense:
“Steph, he’s obviously a proven player in this league, had a lot of success. The resume speaks for itself. But I think what I’ve been so impressed with is just him in the building. He’s been great for the guys. Just talking through things, talking about how he sees routes, how he sees different coverages, blending it all together with what Josh[McDaniels] sees, too. But just having a veteran guy in that room that’s had the resume and the career he had is a huge boost for us.”
On being on the field and the coverages, and his experience:
“He’s obviously, I don’t know what he’s at, 11 or 12 years in. He’s obviously seen a lot of different coverage. Probably every coverage you could see, every different look you could see, how you can expose guys, how you can tackle leverage this way, how you can get open in different ways. Picking his brain, I know it’s been good for the young guys in the receiver room, but we could pick a lot stuff from what he has, too. It’s just deciding to go to work with him. It’s so early right now, so we’re still building, but I’ve enjoyed my time with him.”
On what having an experienced coaching staff brings and how different the day-to-day is:
“It’s good. I mean, I was with Josh a couple of years ago when he was here, and I could speak for Josh, at least right now. All the other assistants, I have a short time around them, but I’ve been very impressed so far with everybody. Everybody has brought a lot to the table. But Josh, just from experience and then seeing him now, again, just his level of knowledge and how he can just help us learn and take the step forward, and have something go wrong on the field and be able to fix it, and how we can get better from it. He’s a tremendous teacher, and it’s fun to go in the meeting room and learn because you learn something new with him every single day. That’s the same with Vrabel so far, just learning so much of the game. Obviously, I was with Bill, and Bill saw the game in such a great way all those years. But Vrabel under him and then all the coaching experience, he’s a tremendous mind that you can pick and really learn a lot on a day-to-day basis from Vrabel, too.”
On having played in McDaniels offense before and how often he finds himself being someone his teammates ask questions to:
“Yeah, I mean, definitely the receivers or a tight end next to me, I can communicate with and really talk through things. When we have a slower walk-through tempo or something that we know that’s going to come, I’ve been able to be a resource for those guys in any way that I can. And all the guys know that I’m open to whatever and helping guys out because I want us all to be successful. I need everybody. We need everybody, especially on offense. Just being a resource as much as I can, trying to… There’s still things I’m learning and trying to get back into with Josh’s scheme, but it’s been a lot of fun getting back in it.”
On how difficult it’s been going through two difficult seasons and still being on solid ground:
“That’s a good question, man. I actually think I’ve grown more in the last two years than I have in the last, probably 28 years of my life, to be honest. Just a sense of, obviously, my family has grown, and just being very present at home as much as I can and not letting the outside noise affect me. I feel like I’ve really grown in my faith a lot in the last two years, too. Obviously, to talk about the past, there was not a lot of success. But in those times, I feel like I’ve seen the most growth in those valleys. I feel like when you really dig in the valley and grow and really continue to keep pushing and keep pushing, something good is going to come on the other side of it. It’s something I relate to. I had an injury, missed the whole year, ACL, my third year, and felt like that was probably the deepest valley I’ve ever been in at that time in my life. But there was so much fruit from it that I saw on the other side of it that I’ve been able to apply to my life. That’s been really cool and special. It’s really those valleys where you see the most growth. So, I feel like the last two years, as bad as they’ve been, there’s been some parts that you can take to see a lot of growth.”
On how that growth has contributed to become a better player:
“Yeah, I mean, hopefully it shows on the field for you guys this year. You know what I mean? That’s the goal. But I think just trying to be as consistent, no matter the circumstances. Like Vrabes was saying with me, no matter win, lose, whatever it is, I want to be the same player day in, day out, that the guys can depend on as a player, but as a person, as a leader, no matter what is going on around me, I want to be the same. And so I think that’s where I would say, hopefully, that could show on the field and show in the classroom, show in the meeting room, show in just eating meals with guys or being outside the facility. Just trying to be as consistent as I can and just be the same guy, no matter what’s going on.”
