Patriots Suffer Big Hit in Loss of Personnel Executive

Mike Vrabel didn’t allude to any changes within New England’s front office following what was largely considered to be a solid crop from their 2025 Patriots Draft picks, but it appears they’re about to lose one significant name.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Patriots Director of College Scouting, Camren Williams, is expected to depart the team and join the Denver Broncos.
Schefter reports that he’ll become Denver’s Co-Director of Player Personnel, earning him a promotion following an interview he took there last week.
It’s certainly a big hit for the Patriots, as Williams was a big figure within their personnel department. Anyone who watched the videos from this year’s draft as the team made their selections may have noticed that Williams was often one of the first people to speak to the players, before being handed off to Eliot Wolf, Mike Vrabel, and then finally, New England Patriots owner, Robert Kraft.
Williams, who was seen on video sitting next to Matt Groh during night one of the draft, was the one who made the first call several weeks ago to #4 overall pick Will Campbell, letting him know he was about to be selected.
That tells you where he stood within the organization, and it looks like he’ll now take the next step within his career out in the Mile High City.
Vrabel was asked whether or not he expected any front office changes last week, telling reporters that all areas of the team would be looked at this offseason.
“We’re going to continue to try to add players that are going to help us,” said Vrabel. “We’re going to try to continue to add coaches that can help us potentially. I would say that we’re going to probably try to do the same in the personnel department. So anybody that can help us, and we feel like can help us ultimately win, we’re going to try to do that at every level throughout the program.”
With the team sitting with the #3 overall pick last April, Williams gave some insight into some of the factors in the team’s thought process as they pondered their options. He said ahead of that draft that regardless of who they picked, the goal needed to be to find a player who would have a big impact given the value of that selection.
“It’s really about impact — on and off the field,” said Williams at the time via Mike Reiss. “With a pick that high [3], you need to find a player that’s a difference-maker. In order to win games in this league, that’s what you need.”
It’s safe to say in Drake Maye, they made the right decision. With so many holes on the roster, they could have passed on Maye and traded out, with multiple reports indicating that there were indeed offers there to try and convince New England to move back.
Instead, they stayed and made what appears to be a franchise-altering move in taking a quarterback who seems to have all the potential everyone hoped the former North Carolina QB would have. Had they traded out or kicked the can into 2025, it would have been a decision they likely would be kicking themselves for.
For now, this one definitely creates a void and how they replace him will bear watching. Williams’ contributions while scouting players are something that has received repeated praise over the years, with his laser-focused intensity and his love of that aspect of his job having contributed heavily to the team’s success.
The expectations are certainly high for this year’s draft class, and whoever steps in for Williams definitely has big shoes to fill. Especially for a team where young prospects are going to be key to their future, as Vrabel tries to rebuild a roster into one that can begin competing again at a championship level.
