East West Shrine Game Day 1 Practice Report

The East West Shrine Game, a collection of College All-Stars, a good percentage of which will be drafted, started practice on Saturday.  The game itself will be on Thursday Night at 7:00 on NFL Network.  This is the 100th East West Shrine game, which is a major fundraiser for the Shriner’s Children Hospital.

I am not in attendance at the practices or game but will be highlighting the eye-witness reports from various sources.  I will mention names of players that appear on multiple reports.   My final report will be on Wednesday where I will name the players I am watching that could possibly be of interest to the Patriots.

Antwuan Powell-Ryland – Edge – Virginia Tech – He led the nation with 16 sacks.  At 6’2”. 253-pounds he has 4.7 speed.  His big drawback is his arm length, which is 311/8”.   His first 3 seasons at Florida were uneventful, but after transferring to Virginia Tech he exploded with 9.5 sacks in 2023 and followed that up with 16 in 2024.

Efrom Chism III – WR – Eastern Washington – The 5’10” 195-pound receiver was in and out of his cuts with precision, easily creating separation.  Chism’s main drawback is his straight line speed which is estimated at 4.57.

Zeek Briggers – DT – Georgia Tech – The relatively unknown player stands 6’6”, 320-pounds.  Hard to miss this space-eater.  He has never been much on the pass rush, but can be a 1st and 2nd down run stuffer.

Joshua Gray – G – Oregon State – He was a guy I have wanted to see for a while now and a potential Patriots selection.  He has played Guard and Tackle, but is being moved into OC for this game and handling it well.  He is 6’4” 310-pounds and runs a 5.06 40-yard dash.  His pass-blocking skills are excellent.

Nick Nash – WR – San Jose State – Nash converted to WR in 2022 and had 48-728-8 statline in 2023 and exploded to 104-1382-16 this season.  The description was uncoverable.

Opt Outs – Sheddur Sanders is at the East West Shrine game but not participating.  He will conduct interviews only.  Shilo Sanders is also following that plan, and it will probably hurt him.  He needs to show what he has against comparable players.

Senior Bowl Opt Outs – It’s no surprise that Ohio State’s Will Howard, Jack Sawyer and Donavan Jackson have opted out.  Notre Dame’s QB Riley Leonard has decided to play in the Senior Bowl.

Senior Bowl will be next Saturday with their Practices starting on Monday.  NFL Network will be broadcasting the practices Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with Game on Saturday at 1:30 on NFL Network.

Mark Morse

Merrimack Valley native and lifelong fan of the New England Patriots. My earliest memories of the Patriots were attending as a child with my dad, the off-season practice at Phillips Academy. I was at the Patriots game at Harvard Stadium in 1970 where Bob “Harpo” Gladieux was called out of the stands by the stadium announcer over the PA to play in the game. Analyzing the draft since ESPN first started to televise it in 1980 and former writer for the Lowell Sun Newspaper.
