Another Belichick is parting ways with the New England Patriots, with Steve Belichick reportedly set to take a position in the college ranks.

According to reports, he’s reuniting with former Patriots coach Jedd Fisch out at the University of Washington, with Fisch hiring Belichick to take over the defensive coordinator position.

The two were colleagues here in New England in 2020 when Fisch was the quarterbacks coach for the Patriots, with Fisch departing after that season to take over the job at the University of Arizona.

He was successful during his tenure, turning the program around after three seasons as the Wildcats went from 1-11 in 2021, to 5-7 in 2022, before finishing his final season 10-3, including an impressive 38-24 win in the Alamo Bowl over Oklahoma.

However, after being hired back in January as the head coach at the University of Washington, it opened the door for Fisch to put together a new staff after accepting a seven-year contract that will pay him $7.75 per year.

He’ll now have someone who should definitely give his new defense a boost.  After 12 seasons in New England, Belichick has spent five of those calling plays and had quietly become highly regarded among the coaching staff alongside Jerod Mayo.

Following the departure of their father, former Patriots coach Bill Belichick, both Steve and Brian Belichick were reportedly offered positions to stay on alongside Mayo after the club promoted Demarcus Covington to defensive coordinator.

However, Steve instead appears set on trying to establish himself elsewhere as he continues his coaching career, which is probably for the best.  Despite the club’s success on that side of the ball, having played under his dad, he hasn’t gotten enough credit for his work here and this opportunity gives him a chance to make a name for himself.

As for Steve’s younger brother, Brian, it’s unknown to this point if the safeties coach will be staying on as Mayo continues rounding out his staff since taking over as head coach.

Mayo has been busy conducting quite a few interviews in recent weeks, but things are starting to come together.

He’s already made several key moves in the most important positions, having promoted Covington on defense, along with the addition of special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.
