The sophomore season for quarterback Mac Jones didn’t go as planned. Between an injury that caused him to miss time and inexperienced offensive coaching, 2022 was largely forgettable for the former first-round pick.
In 14 games, he finished with 2,997 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in an offense that struggled to move the ball down the field and nobody was more critical of how it went down than Jones himself.
When asked if he was “satisfied” with his progress this year after the season finale loss in Buffalo, Jones answered with a direct “No.”
“Obviously you look at each year of your football life and you want to get better as a player,” he added. “I did. I learned a lot. And I think a lot of guys on our team learned a lot. But it was not the progress that any of us wanted to make.
“It starts with me … We made a lot of progress throughout the year but not enough to consistently do it. It’s disappointing.”
Despite how it ended, Jones’ head remains high and optimistic for 2023 and the changes that will come with it. The Patriots’ front office remains in the midst of an extensive search for a new offensive coordinator in the hopes of getting the young quarterback back on track.
Over Instagram earlier this week, Jones shared some photographs from some of the better moments from this past season.
The photos were accompanied by a short quote that reads “If…”, the title of a poem by Rudyard Kipling.
Jones learned about the poem from his father Gordon, who saw it when he played at Wimbledon in 1978. According to MassLive’s Mark Daniels, Mac usually hangs the poem in his locker.

In response to his posting, numerous teammates voiced their full support for their quarterback.
