New England Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon is off to a dominant start in 2022.
Through five games Judon is tied for the NFL lead in sacks with six joining Maxx Crosby of the Raiders, Micah Parsons of the Cowboys, and Nick Bosa of the 49ers. He also has 19 total tackles and a forced fumble.
During Sunday’s win over the Lions, Judon recorded two sacks along with four quarterback hits, one of which forced Lions quarterback Jared Goff to fumble the football that safety Kyle Dugger scooped up and returned 59-yards for a touchdown.
It was this sack that put Judon into the Patriots record books as it marked the fifth straight game he recorded at least one, surpassing the mark of four straight to begin a season by Pro Football Hall of Famer Andre Tippett in 1986.
Prior to Sunday’s game, ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss spoke with Tippett to get his thoughts on Judon’s play so far.
“He brings excitement. I love watching him play,” Tippett said.
“I’m just like all the 60-70,000 fans we have in the building watching him, you see those red sleeves [under his jersey], and he’s all revved up, trying to get off on the ball. And I’m trying to get off on the ball with him. Fast hands, slap, rip, uppercut, speed rush. Throw a bull rush on this guy. I’m there.”
In additon to surpassing Tippetts franchise record, Sunday’s performance against the Lions marked Judon’s ninth career game with two or more sacks. For his efforts he earned the Week 5 AFC Defensive Player of The Week Award.
Judon will look to extend his streak to six games against the Cleveland Browns in Ohio this upcoming Sunday.
