Sunday’s battle between the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens was painful enough given the mistakes and miscues for Mac Jones and the offense, but it looks like there was a potential injury added to the insult for Jones at the end of this one.

The Patriots quarterback saw the Ravens’ Calais Campbell land on his ankle late in the game as Jones threw up what would be his third interception of the afternoon, which saw the second-year QB yell out in pain and hop off the field in serious agony.

Greg Bedard of Boston Sports Journal reported that Jones was carried off the field to the locker room screaming in pain, which could be a sign that it’s a significant injury.  Photos that have since surfaced of Jones heading to the locker room, including one close-up of him, also didn’t look promising.

Another report from Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston said that Jones wasn’t in the locker room after the game but “he could be heard” outside the locker room soon after leaving the sideline and was clearly in significant pain.

If Jones is lost for the long-term, it’s likely that Brian Hoyer could potenially get the starting nod next Sunday when the Patriots head out to Green Bay to take on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

New England fell to 1-2 on the season following their 37-26 defeat to Baltimore, which came in what was the season-opener at Gillette Stadium.

UPDATE 8:31pm ET: According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Jones underwent X-rays on his ankle which came back negative.  However, Mike Giardi of NFL Network also reported that the team is concerned Jones sufffered potential tendon and/or ligament damage, which X-rays wouldn’t show. Mike Reiss of ESPN did Tweet after the game that Jones is expected to address the media tomorrow, which is a positive sign given that injured players, especially ones with serious injuries, generally don’t talk to the media following getting hurt.

Very unfortunate. Despite the many interceptions the team still needs him – to play better. He is the hope for the future. May he get better soon and improve quickly. Otherwise this season is lost. It may be anyway. His health and the future is more important.
