Just days after scoring the New England Patriots’ lone touchdown in Miami against the Dolphins, it looks like running back Ty Montgomery is going to be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

The team reportedly placed Montgomery on injured reserve on Tuesday due to a right knee injury, which means he’ll miss at least the next four games.

Montgomery seemingly avoided potential disaster during the preseason after getting carted off the field against the Raiders in New England’s match-up against Las Vegas.  Reports after had been encouraging, with the fact he was even on the field for practice last week surprising most people.

He was active for Sunday’s contest and the veteran caught three passes on four targets for 15 yards and a touchdown against the Dolphins.  However, clearly something occurred during the game that possibly aggravated whatever he was dealing with and now Montgomery will be sidelined for at least the next month as he recovers further.

The move likely opens the door for potential playing time for other players like J.J. Taylor or Pierre Strong Jr., with Taylor having been the one who stood out after averaging four yards per carry after he rushed 14 times for 56-yards during the preseason, as well as catching 3 passes for 33-yards.  Meanwhile, Strong did flash on a few occasions, but he’s yet to really emerge offensively.

Following the designation for Montgomery, the team reportedly elevated Lil’Jordan Humphrey from the practice squad, with the club also signing Marcus Cannon to the practice squad.  They’ll return to practice Wednesday to begin preparing for their next match-up, which will be against the Steelers down in Pittsburgh.
