Football season may still be five months away, but there’s been some work quietly going on down at Gillette Stadium that should certainly have things looking a little different in 2022.

The team announced a major renovation back in December that included closing in the north end of the stadium, adding new closed in areas for events, as well as modifying the existing lighthouse structure.

The lighthouse came down last week, and the construction appears to be well underway as the stadium gets set for one of the biggest changes we’ve seen since it opened to fans back in 2002.

Jessica Gelman, who is the CEO for the Kraft Analytics Group as well as the Co-founder of the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, posted some photos from her office at the facility on Thursday showing the current progress.

She also added a “before” photo, which showed how things looked just a few days earlier prior to when those structures came down:

The official account for the stadium showed some individual shots of the progress as the lighthouse was demolished and it certainly marks the end of an era as that was obviously a big symbol for the stadium.

Lights out (for now).

The new lighthouse, which appears in the renderings on the team’s website, shows it will have a different look compared to the previous one and it will be centered in-between the two massive glass-enclosed areas at that end of the field.  Given the current progress, it looks like it will likely soon be under construction.

The new lighthouse structure will also include a 360-degree observation deck, overlooking both the stadium as well as the venues in and around Patriot Place.

According to the team’s website, the cost of this current project is estimated to be $225 million, which includes the cost of the previous end zone upgrades.  Those upgrades were completed in 2021.
