Here’s a rundown of the highlights as the New England Patriots held  a Blue Team vs White Team scrimmage:

Attendance

Absent: WR Cameron Dorner, CB Carlton Davis, OT Will Campbell, FB Reggie Gilliam, DT Christian Barmore, CB Charles Woods, OL Caedan Wallace

PUP: LB Harold Landry

NFI: S Brenden Schooler

Returned: WR Romeo Doubs, TE Jack Westover

Practice News and Notes From Friday:

Player of the Day – Pop Douglas 6-6, 111 yards, and 2 TDs

Coach Vrabel’s Press Conference before the practice was very enlightening.   He stated that Romeo Doubs’ absence the last few games was for a “positive” personal reason and not an injury.  Jack Westover will also be back today.  Carlton Davis will not participate in the joint practice nor the Pre-Season game.

Lomu at Left Tackle

The experiment of using Dametrious Crownover at Left Tackle is over.  Because of the scrimmage, the Patriots used Caleb Lomu at Left Tackle in the place of Will Campbell.  Crownover was the Right Tackle on the White team with Marcus Bryant at Left Tackle.

Brenden Schooler’s Injury Status

The Patriots are not pushing to get Schooler back on the field.  They know what the veteran can do with his proven track record on Special Teams.  They are being “very cautious,” and there is “no real reason to push that or force the issue”.  There is “no reason to push him back now until he’s as close to 100% as he can possibly be”.

Mike Vrabel Asked If Patriots Will Keep 7 WRs

“Sure,” he told reporters.  “All we have to do is find the best way to keep guys that will help us win.”

Vrabel on Kyle Williams

“I really, really know that Kyle is going to help us.  His speed is going to help us.”

Vrabel expects Campbell to participate in the Joint Practice next Tuesday.

– Greg Bedard

The Patriots will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Super Bowl team this season, Mike Vrabel revealed.

– Zack Cox

From the media tent: Undrafted free-agent LB Khalil Jacobs (Missouri) has reason to smile as one of the surprise stories of training camp. He said the Patriots were the only team to invite him for a pre-draft visit.

– Mike Reiss

Comings and Goings

The New England Patriots announced Friday that they have signed rookie free agent S Eric Butler from San Diego State. In addition, the Patriots released rookie free agent DT David Blay Jr.

Butler, 23, played in 48 games during his college career and finished with 119 total tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble and 1 interception that he returned for a touchdown. The 6’ 1.6”, 190-pounder also blocked two punts while in college.  Butler ran a slower 4.59 40 for a Safety.

I thought Blay was waived earlier this week with the signing of DT Casey Rogers.  Blay, 23, was signed by New England as a rookie free agent from Miami (Fla.) on May 8, 2026. The 6-foot-2, 292-pounder played at West Chester (2021-22), Louisiana Tech (2023-24) and Miami (Fla.) in 2025.

Overall, he played in 46 games during his college career and finished with 129 total tackles, 11½ sacks, 1 pass defensed and 1 forced fumble.

Merrimack Valley native and lifelong fan of the New England Patriots. My earliest memories of the Patriots were attending as a child with my dad, the off-season practice at Phillips Academy. I was at the Patriots game at Harvard Stadium in 1970 where Bob “Harpo” Gladieux was called out of the stands by the stadium announcer over the PA to play in the game. Analyzing the draft since ESPN first started to televise it in 1980 and former writer for the Lowell Sun Newspaper.
