Drake Maye vs Tommy DeVito: Maye Comes Up Short in Patriots' Blue-White Scrimmage

Things got a little competitive on the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium on Friday, with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel putting together an intra-squad scrimmage to change things up.

Here’s a quick rundown based on reports from today’s session:

Patriots Blue-White Scrimmage

The two offensive groups battled it out, with Drake Maye (white team) facing off against Tommy DeVito and Behren Morton (both on the blue team), although DeVito saw the majority of snaps in this one.

One key benefit that DeVito had was the fact that A.J. Brown was part of his offense, and Christian Gonzalez was out there with him for the blue team on the defensive side of the football.

That made both Brown and Gonzalez, who had spent the majority of this week facing off in some pretty competitive reps, teammates on Friday.

Meanwhile, Maye had receivers Kayshon Boutte, Kyle Williams, and Romeo Doubs, as well as tight end Eli Raridon and running back TreVeyon Henderson as part of the white team’s offense.

Joining Brown on the blue team were receivers Pop Douglas, Kyle Dixon, Tejhaun Palmer, Efton Chism, and Mack Hollins. Hunter Henry, CJ Dippre, and Jack Westover rounded things out at tight end, while Rhamondre Stevenson, Terrell Jennings, and Myles Montgomery were the running backs.

Vrabel Sets “Stipulations” Ahead of Scrimmage

Vrabel said on Friday that the teams were decided on Thursday, with both Terrell Williams and Tony Dews being the coaches who were able to draft their respective players.

However, one interesting part of this process was the fact that there were apparently a couple of notable stipulations involved.

“So T [Terrell Williams] won the coin toss. T took Drake and got Jared. That was one stipulation – that Jared traveled with Drake and then [Efton Chism] Chizz and Mack [Hollins] had to be on the same team too. Those are the only two stipulations for the draft.”

The reason behind Maye and Wilson needing to be together was obvious, since the two need to continue building chemistry as Wilson begins his first full season at center.

The second stipulation is a little more interesting. Vrabel talked about Chism and Hollins’ relationship on Friday, which is certainly pretty humorous.

“I mean, it’s unbelievable,” said Vrabel of the two receivers. “I mean, you come in there, and they’re in the pool, the rehab pool, and they’re playing, like, pool games. It’s like summer camp. They’re throwing stuff and got goggles on, and they swim down and pick up things on the bottom of the pool.”

“They study all the time. They work out, they train, they compete, they push each other. It is a— it’s a really cool thing to see a guy that had been in this league a long time, played with a couple of different teams, and a kid from Western out in Washington and a small school, and they come together, and I think they’ve helped. They both help each other”

Maye got off to a slow start, missing on some passes early before coming on late, but his team still fell short against DeVito in a 22-15 loss. Reporters had him at 10-of-19, along with touchdowns to Romeo Doubs and TreVeyon Henderson.

Meanwhile, DeVito was outstanding on Friday and further entrenched himself as the backup quarterback heading into this season. DeVito finished 13-of-16 with 2 touchdowns while looking extremely sharp. Morton completed 4-of-7 during the session.

Douglas Shines in Scrimmage

Douglas ended up with a big outing and was a big key to the blue team’s success, with the wideout coming up with quite a few big plays, including a couple of downfield throws and two touchdowns.

The young receiver got some praise from Vrabel earlier in the week, with Vrabel noting that despite the limited targets he got last season, Douglas always rose to the challenge.

“Yeah, I think that Pop was – I think the most impressive thing was that he was ready, whether he got 12 snaps or he got 30 snaps,” said Vrabel. “I think some of his best plays were his ability to not catch the football and go and finish. And he made plenty of plays for us, but his attitude remained really good.”

“And I know that every receiver wants to get the ball more. And I think we’ll continue to try to find ways for Pop to help us and then look at where he can continue to improve. But nobody cares more about the team than Pop Douglas. I think that shows by the way he plays.”

Play of the Day

The play of the day on Friday turned out to be pretty wild, with reporter accounts indicating that it started with an incompletion from Morton to newly added wideout Tejhaun Palmer on a curl route near the sideline. Palmer couldn’t come up with the catch and had the football go off his hands, and it was bobbled in the air multiple times before ultimately ending up in the hands of teammate Myles Montgomery. Montgomery then took off and was tackled inside the 10-yard line.

That play got everyone fired up, and it was certainly one of several lighthearted moments throughout a practice that the players really seemed to enjoy.

Odds and Ends

Veteran signal-caller Tommy DeVito appeared to have some good chemistry with A.J. Brown, with the quarterback finding him on more than one occasion during the scrimmage… Kindle Vildor held his own against Brown with the defensive back breaking up a pass and making life difficult for the veteran wideout. … Caleb Lomu started at left tackle for Drake Maye’s white team, but left partway through the scrimmage with what reportedly appeared to be an issue with his shoe. He did later return and finished the session. … Hunter Henry left Friday’s practice with what appeared to be an ankle injury. No further reports were available on his status. … Corey Durden came up with a nice play during one series where he knocked the football out of the hands of rookie Behren Morton as he was throwing the football. … Undrafted free agent receiver Kyle Dixon apparently got hurt on Friday, as he was spotted walking off the field with a trainer. … Nick DeGennaro came up with a nice play during the scrimmage, hauling in a 4th-down pass from Maye to extend a drive that was capped off with a touchdown throw to Romeo Doubs. … The blue team pulled off a trick play Friday, which included a flea-flicker from DeVito to receiver Mack Hollins for a big gain, before the drive stalled and they settled for a field goal. … Morton did get reps with both teams on Friday, with the rookie also getting some snaps with Maye’s white team. … Maye connected with second-year running back TreVeyon Henderson for a touchdown on Friday, with Henderson making a nice play despite having Namdi Obiazor all over him. … Former Patriots receiver Danny Amendola was reportedly in Foxboro and was spotted taking in practice on Friday. … Despite an early miss, Andy Borregales hit his remaining field goal attempts and continues to look sharp at this point in training camp. … Missing from Friday’s practice were Carlton Davis, Will Campbell, Reggie Gilliam, Charles Woods, Christian Barmore, Caedan Wallace, and Cameron Dorner. Wallace left practice with an injury earlier in the week, and with the Patriots having recently worked out guard Greg Van Roten, they’re clearly not satisfied with their depth at that position. That’s bad news for Wallace, who needed to have a good training camp and might be in trouble by the time cutdowns get here.
