For the second time in four weeks, New England Patriots kicker Nick Folk has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
On Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, Folk successfully converted two extra point attempts and went 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts, including the game-winning, 50-yarder as time expired to give the Patriots another last second victory.
According to the Patriots, Folk became the first kicker in NFL history to convert multiple game-winning field goals of 50-plus yards as time expired in a single season. Folk also won the Patriots week nine matchup against the New York Jets with a 51-yard field goal, earning his first 2020 Special Teams Player of the Week award.
In his NFL career, Folk has now earned six total player of the week honors.
Speaking with the media Thursday morning, head coach Bill Belichick offered up his praise of Folk for his contributions this season.
“We have a tremendous amount of confidence in Nick,” Belichick said. “He works very hard at his job and handles the responsibility that comes with it as well as he could. He’s got great poise and great demeanor, and I think everybody feels very confident when he goes out on the field, which is a great feeling.
“And it’s something that you have to earn. That’s not something that’s given to you or you just pick up along the way. You have to go out there and earn it, and he’s certainly done that.”
Through 11 games this season, Folk has made 19 field goals on 21 attempts and is 20 of 22 on extra points.
Sunday’s game winner marked Folk’s 19th consecutive field goal made.
