Barstool Sports Prepares 70,000 “Goodell Clown” Rally Towels For Opening Night
David Butler II - USA TODAY Sports
On Patriots opening night, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell may be in store for even more than he bargained for from an already disgusted fanbase when he makes his long awaited returned to Foxboro for a regular season game.
David Portnoy, the founder of the ever-growing sports blog Barstool Sports, officially shared over Twitter this week his supply of 70,000 “Goodell Clown” rally towels that will be distributed across tailgate lots around the area of Gillette Stadium next Thursday night.
Orginally only set to be 30,000 towels, Portnoy upped the total following the news Goodell secretly already. attended a preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“Operation Clown Face” as its called, will require many volunteers to help distribute the towels as they won’t be allowed to pass them out on Patriots property per NFL rules.

Portnoy went on WEEI radio’s Ordaway, Merloni and Fauria radio show Friday to discuss the detials of his plan and shared some insight into how the Patriots are handling it.
Portnoy didn’t stop there, as Barstool also bought billboard space on route 1 and shared another Goodell clown face for all to see.

The clown shirt/image has become somewhat of a national phenomenon across the NFL during Goodell’s declining popularity and the rise of Barstool, the shirt spotted here on Portnoy while sneaking into an ESPN live shot during Deflategate and on Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia’following the Super Bowl. It was reported Roger Goodell was “miffed” at the sight of the shirt on Patricia.

While the banner rasing and game already have enough intrigue, keep an eye out in the stands for the towels as an additional subplot next Thursday.
