Thursday Patriots Notebook 10/1: Ryan’s Brady Comments Were in Context

There aren’t always too many positive stories that we hear about over the course of the season, but the one surrounding the fan involved in the mishap on Sunday following Danny Amendola’s touchdown reception and subsequent giveaway of Tom Brady’s 400th touchdown football is one that had a pretty good ending.
Lifelong season ticket holder David Bowen was the fan who was handed the ball by Amendola, and, according to CBS Sports, after later being approached by a Patriots ball boy requesting to swap for a different game ball, Bowen agreed.
There are plenty of fans who would have headed off to Ebay and tried to cash in, but Bowen instead opted to give it back and on Wednesday he was rewarded for that decision. He was reportedly able to bring a few of his friends to meet with Brady after practice, and the veteran quarterback thanked him as well as “signed some stuff”, which made his day.
“He signed some stuff for me and thanked me for returning the ball,” Bowen told CBS Sports. “I got to congratulate an icon on this amazing accomplishment and what he’s done. It was great.”

One of the best lines on the event came from Bowen, who later tweeted:
Kind of Ironic born and raised in as canton, ma and I played a part in a guy ending up in canton, Ohio someday.

Good stuff, and good for him as Brady also wrote “Thank You” on the football he received.
RYAN’S COMMENTS WERE MADE IN CONTEXT, BUT TAKEN INCORRECTLY OUT OF IT:
There’s no secret that when Rex Ryan says something stupid, I generally don’t have an issue giving him a little grief and on Wednesday he said some things about New England that has the media world buzzing.
Ryan, whose team is getting set to face the Giants this week, said some things directly related to the outcome of what happened two weeks ago, which obviously everyone has jumped on. But, to be fair, after watching and reviewing Wednesday’s media session, here’s the actual full transcription of exactly what went down:
Do you relish the opportunity to face Eli [Manning] at home, and I’m wondering if there might be a little sour taste about what Brady did when he walked in here two weeks ago? This guy did win two Super Bowls…
“Well I like the fact that he beat Brady twice, so, you know, I like that. But nah…I’m good. I’m not all the way over the Brady butt-kicking he did against us, but as a team though, we’re just getting better. We get a little better this week, get a little better this week, and we’ll see what happens. But we’re not where we want to be right now but we’re a work in progress and we know we got a big challenge in front of us this week but we’re looking forward to it.”
How important was that, as tough as that loss was against New England, how important was that to refocus the team and to focus on the job at hand? Did this team and you get something out of, maybe, that loss? I want to say humility but I’m not sure if that’s the right word?
“No, we are who we are and we don’t need to apologize for it or whatever. I think it was better for me to get a real grasp of our team and how we are and all that type of stuff and our emotions got the better of us. But what I love was how we battled back and when a team was clearly trying to embarass us, we stood up to them and said, ‘Alright, here we are, we’re going to give you our best shot regardless of what the scoreboard is and we scored three touchdowns to their three points. So we’ll see, again, we’ll play that one down the road. But I think the thing that you realize is how when we talked about building a team that represented our community and the pride that we would take in playing sixty minutes, that showed it right there, if anybody ever doubted it.”

PATRIOTS CUT PRACTICE SQUAD PLAYERS, TRADE HOOMANAWANUI:
New England made some cuts on their practice squad on Wednesday, with Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reporting that the team released four players, which included LB Dekoda Watson, WR Kenbrell Thompkins, DT Joe Vellano and OL Chris Barker.
Volin also reported New England made a trade with the Saints, giving up tight end Michael Hoomanawanui in exchange for defensive end Akiem Hicks.
Hicks, who is just 25 years old, is a former 3rd round pick in his fourth season and had his best year in 2013 where he finished with 56 tackles along with 4.5 sacks. He played in 15 games in 2014 and finished with 41 tackles and 2 sacks, and has just two tackles so far in 2015.
Doug Kyed of NESN also reported that the Patriots tried out cornerback Brandon Dixon, wide receiver Austin Hill, offensive tackle Sean Hickey, center Josh Allen and linebacker Jayson DiManche.
Clearly more changes are coming as the Patriots have already been active tweaking their roster, which also saw the earlier trade for Chicago linebacker Jonathan Bostic Monday.
FORMER PATRIOTS TE WATSON IN ACCIDENT DURING HOOMAN TRADE:
While the Patriots and Saints were making a deal to bring New England tight end Michael Hoomanawanui to New Orleans, the Saints saw one of their own starters get into a car accident.
According to former Patriots TE Ben Watson’s official Twitter account, Watson was stopped and got rear-ended and “launched” into the car in front him.
Was at a stand still, got rear ended by a distracted driver and launched into the car in front of me. The texts, calls, timelines can wait!

The fact he wasn’t hurt is certainly good news for the Saints, with Watson part of an offense that’s still trying to find itself after an 0-3 start and the injury to Drew Brees. So far through three games the veteran has 9 catches for 73 yards and 0 touchdowns.
