FOXBORO, MA — The Boston Globe reported on Thursday that the Patriots may be closing in on a multi-year deal with free agent nose tackle Brentson Buckner.
Buckner is considered to be an excellent run stopper and a decent pass rusher, someone who New England could use after losing Chad Eaton to free agency. During his career he has seen time as both a defensive end and as a defensive tackle. Buckner started all sixteen games last season for San Francisco and finished the year with 7 sacks.
With the lack of defensive linemen for the Patriots after they also released Henry Thomas earlier this week, New England is in need of adding some players to the position. It’s one of several problems that the team will be dealing with during the offseason.
Buckner is 29 and heading into his 8th season in the NFL. He spent three seasons with Pittsburgh (1994-96) and one with Cincinnati (1997) before signing with 49ers.
