Saw this linked above... Figured Jakobi deserved his own thread...

thats a big contract for him, but that is the market for comparable wrs...

Is that too big? Would we be better re-signing him? Or give up some draft picks and cap cash to go after trade bait receivers like Tee Higgins or the lesser talented Jerry Juedy? Any other guys that could targeted?

.

The free agency market is so big for WR's that someone is going to overpay Meyers to be a depth piece or a serviceable WR2.

And frankly, we need a WR overhaul, not being paying a guy who has a ceiling because we've been pretending he can be a number 1. If this was 2016 and we had Edelman, Gronk and Amendola, yeah maybe pay a guy like Meyers the way you might pay Hogan for a year or two to be that extra weapon that makes us harder to stop. But right now we don't have that.

Like Trey Flowers, if there's rumors circulating, there may be truth to it. No good team is going to pay Meyers a lot of money, so the bad team that pays him is going to be extremely disappointed when he gets erased by #2 and #3 CB's.

I'm in the minority that welcomes his exit.

I think only good teams who have a true #1 will be looking at him. For instance, if Buffalo had more money under the cap, Meyers would be perfect for them as a reliable sidekick to Stefon Diggs. He'd be a perfect #2 for them and he'd open up the field. Some really good teams have studs who get doubled, but then they don't have guys on the opposite side who get open reliably and are sure-handed.

Y'all keep talking about his ceiling, and yet in 4 years, all he's done is get better every year. Comparing him to Hogan is a joke. For that matter, he's better than Amendola as well. And there isn't another receiver on the roster who Jones has shown the slightest chemistry with. But sure, dump him and take another shot in the draft.

And the issue is 4 years in he's still firmly a WR 2 who still produces like a WR2 despite being treated and schemed like a WR1.

So the question everyone has to ask is, are we going to pay a WR2 a ton of money (and it will be a ton of money) because we have failed to address WR for years. Because overpaying Meyers to produce like he has is basically a punishment for failed roster construction at that point.

It's just not a smart decision for a team that is still building and isn't in win now mode. Maybe if we were in the Super Bowl hunt and Meyers was a piece that we don't want to disrupt the team by losing and could keep us over the edge on offense.... then you make the overpay. But right now it's a bit of a fools errand.

The fact that he's the only WR on the roster that has some chemistry with the QB is more of an indictment on the weapons. And it's especially stupid when we don't know if the the current QB will be the QB 5 years from now and how someone else will mesh with Meyers.

Trey Flowers was all Patricia trying to buy leadership for an organization bereft of that... Massive overpay, and if MP wasn't desperate for players to follow his lead in Detroit, he never would have gotten that deal...

Josh may be in a similar position, but I don't know... Bowl Cut Davis isn't wont to let him go this early into his contract... His seat isn't so hot...

We don't have anyone better... And there isn't better option available in free agency...

Yes to Patricia's desperation, but Flowers was a hot topic on this board before he was going to be a FA. There were rumors he was going to get $15M per year.

This free agent market is terrible for receivers. All of the top guys got huge contracts last offseason (and you can see why). Meyers is the best of a bad group. He is going get a huge payday from someone, but that payday is going to be market price for WR2. WR1 would be getting 25 to 30 million. So 15 million for Meyers is actually a fair and market level contract.

Love the player and the person… but paying a slot receiver, a possession receiver Christian Kirk type money is a hard pass.

Oh c'mon. He doesn't even get erased by All Pro CBs. Gimme a break. That being said, I hope he gets a ton of money but not by the Pats.

Or let him go and put his money to a true number 1, not sure of the free agent market so I'm not sure who's available.

If you were correct in that he doesn't get erased by ALL Pro's, he'd have a lot better stats than he does and you'd want to pay him. He's a catch and fall down guy. The Pats WR's have been among the worst in the league at separating from defenders for years now. It sure seems like most of the damage that he does is when the Pats run play action pass and the MLB bites. Put a man on him and he...

So who to target?

Of FFS. Maybe those stats have to do with Cam/Rookie/Patricia. We'll see how he does in the next few years, but he's outright beaten Xavien Howard and Diggs multiple times on man, not including all the other Pro Bowlers. Like I said, gimme a break.

The Patriots paid Nelson Agholor an AAV of $15 million before the new TV deals, and few if any saw him as a number 1 receiver. So, why wouldn’t the Pats pay their best receiver for the last 3 seasons and the best FA receiver on the market a $18 million AAV?

The Patriots are not in a place to go backwards to go forward faster later. We need a good #2 receiver. Why not keep the good, reliable one they have? I’ve never seen a fan base that craps on their own players as much as this one. Nobody is ever good enough.

So who to target?
Imho, like BGC has said, Pats should draft 'em. Since WR has gotten to be such a critical piece, they need to get 2 every draft at this point and see what sticks. No more GOAT to make up for bad choices.

So who to target?
In FA? Not really anybody. Build through the draft. Need to apply the money towards special players.

So why wouldn't you pay him?
