Re: Watson has ankle surgery

that sucks, because in the beginning of the year he was doing great till roy williams came along. You could tell something was bothering him after that.

This may be a dumb question but...

Has Williams ever been flagged for doing this? I seem to remember once - maybe Thanksgiving.

It should really be a point of emphasis for the refs. It would stop happening if everytime it was done resulted in a 20 yard penalty and/or an ejection.

my question is why didn't he have the surgery right after the super bowl...why did he wait until resently.

yup, dumb q

he has been penalized plenty and he has been suspended for it.

Little slip there....do you resent that he did it recently?

Yes. He was flagged several times this past year, but it wasn't illegal until I think this season, maybe last.

He was also suspended for a game as a repeat offender.

He did not get an in-game penalty for the one with Watson. There was offsides on the same play though.

It's not like the ref cannot see it. Nothing on the field could be more obvious.

I just saw the replay of the tackle and unfortunately it wasn't the "horsecollar" tackle, but a variation where Williams grabs Watson from behind and around his waist and rides him down (like calf roping) throwing his body across the back of Watson's legs. All of Watson's own weight plus Williams is on his ankle, which is pinned underneath him.

Technically it wasn't a horsecollar, thats why Williams didn't get a penalty.

I think there's a perception, among both fans and the league, that it's the location being grabbed (inside collar) that causes the problem. Unfortunately, it's the dropping of the weight on the legs that causes the injury. Whether it's the collar that's grabbed, or some other part of the shirt, the same risky actions are taking place below the waist.

Does anybody know? This is a huge question in my mind too.
usually when people are made out of glass it takes them a while to make important decisions.

The Roy Williams Horse Collar Claims Another Victim: Benjamin Watson
Posted Mar 29th 2008 10:20AM by Ryan Wilson

The Boston Herald's Karen Guregian writes that "according to one source, there is now some concern whether Watson will be ready for training camp in July." That's potentially news, but the perhaps more noteworthy is how Watson was hurt in the first place.

Watson injured the ankle during the second quarter of the Pats' 48-27 Week 6 win at Dallas on Oct. 14. He caught a pass and was dragged down from behind by Cowboys safety Roy Williams. He missed the next two games before returning in Week 9 against Indianapolis. Watson was also inactive two of the last three games of the regular season after reaggravating the injury in the Pittsburgh game. Ah, yes, Roy Williams, the guy who has made a good living out of ending other players' careers via the ol' horse-collar tackle

Even though the rule has been on the books since before the 2005 season, Williams wasn't flagged until last year, and it wasn't against Watson. Desmond Clark was Williams' first victim (or at least the first victim the officials were willing to acknowledge), and then there was the memorable Donovan McNabb takedown that resulted in a one-game suspension.

For all of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's bravado when it comes to doling out punishment for off-field violations, this seems like a pretty big on-field problem. To be fair, Williams didn't recidivate after sitting out a game late in the season, but some Cowboys fans might argue that it made him less effective, which is a whole other issue.

Re: Watson had Ankle Surgery

That explains how Watson had like 6 Tds in the first 6 games but was invincible after wards.
