Report: Patriots To Release Stephen Gostkowski

Surprised it took this long. Maybe they had hope they'd figure out a restructure and he finally said no. Another great Patriot moving on.

Maybe they were waiting for him to heal from his hip surgery before they dumped him.

I'll miss him and I doubt that they'll find anyone as good.

HT and Cannon should be traded next. Even Jules. Full tank and get younger. One or 2 days earlier DMac would not be signed. I can't see why sign a 12M per FS if they are going to rebuild like that.

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’d put odds on Hoyer over #11.
I don't think they want to trade JE. J Stiddy needs a quality target to throw to and Harry, Sanu, Meyers and the TEs are unproven.

Maybe if things turn to **** they dump JE at the trade deadline.

They’re not trying to tank. If they were tanking they wouldn’t be spending the money on DMac, Thuney, etc.

They’re letting old, high priced veterans go, who they think won’t be effective in 2021/2022 when the rebuild is done.

Jules is a good candidate to go though. For Hightower, it depends on how effective BB thinks he’ll be going forward with his injury history. He’s still a team captain and just turned 30.

I doubt they’ll trade Cannon at this point with the uncertainty of the OL and with just how cheap his contract is.

He was the 5th most accurate FG kicker in NFL history. & one of the best athletes to ever play the position.

Easily replaceable.

I read we save 4.8 mil in cap space.

Once again. Please follow Miguel. Release created $2,637,500 cap space

Cap Space=$7,153,834

Q: How much cap space did Stephen Gostkowski's release create? A: $2,637,500. The $4.8M reports are not accounting for both his dead money and the Top 51 rule. The 3.5M reports are not accounting for the Top 51 rule. The deleting of the incorrect tweets begins now

EDIT: Missed Post #39

Not at all surprised ... need the cap space and hip surgery for a kicker is tough one to recover from. Need to re-sign Folk and draft either Bass or Blankenship.

After the Harmon trade anyone who wasn't expecting this just wasn't paying attention. The Pats are cap strapped and this cut doesn't net a lot it was definitely low hanging fruit

Thanks for everything Ghost. What a run full of clutch kicks. This organization has been lucky with kickers.

Let's see what happens to Thuney. IMO he is young and a center piece of this OL. DMac it is about timming IMO. Again i can be wrong, but i feel like, if Brady left one week early they would let him and his brother go.

I really hope Stidham is the answer because they would be in great shape for another run. They have a lot of picks and will have a ton of cap space next season (more than 160M if they trade/cut Jules/HT/Cannon):

Winovich - Cowart - DT - DE

Bentley/Jonathan Jones - OLB - MLB

Gilmore - JoeJuan Williams

McCourty - Chung

Wynn - Froholdt(I hope they extend Thuney and Andrews) - C - Mason - Cajuste

Stidham - Michel/Harris

Harry - WR2 - WR3 - TE

It is the right move. 36 years old coming off of significant leg surgery who has become increasingly less reliable.

They can either try to re-sign him had a lower cap number, which is what the Falcons did with Allen over the weekend - cut him and then re-signed him right away. Or they can bring back Folk, who was very good over the last several weeks (I actually feel more confident when he went to kick in then I did with the cost of the last two years) and then add a rookie to compete with him.

Tucker is far and away the best kicker in the league in his 2020 cap number is only slightly higher (Gost 4.89) at 5.1. He is worth it. Gost is not, despite his legendary career.

Called this when he got injured. I'm going to have myself a cookie now.

He's made some good kicks over the years, but I'm not going to miss his random wide rights/lefts and shanked extra points at the absolute worst times.

Thanks, Gost... all the best to you. You were a helluva kicker for the Pats.

Man, this year's Pats will bring back memories of Butch and Sundance...

Thanks for the great years of service, Stephen. Sucks to be the guy following The Guy. You filled in admirably.

Some K slated to go in the 5th round just got excited. Pay 10% of the money Ghost gets and get 80% of the production. That's The Patriot Way.

I totally forgot about Cowart. They may expect him to be a major contributor next year.

Kicking is weird. The Patriots’ two closest losses had no misses, and the closest win was despite two missed FGs. They would have won and lost all the same games with basically any NFL-quality kicker.
