Man, football really really really destroys your body. I just can't imagine some of the stuff that you have to deal with, day after day after day, that all comes from one game a week. Concussions are terrifying in their own right, but what about all the times someone gets drilled in the leg like Gronk did and has to drain the blood out of their leg, deal with sleep deprivation, and still power through the season.
We can go on and on about how the sport used to be even more brutal, how it's nothing compared to what it used to be, but I mean. At the end of the day, this sport is defined by the most freakishly powerful/athletic human beings (which can't be understated - football players are a hybrid of fitness that no sport comes close to matching, outside of the 'freak' players in the NBA like Lebron) on the planet running full speed and hitting each other.
I don't blame Gronk a cent for how he handled any of this. Glad to see him being a voice for other options for pain therapy.
Edit: Added some nuance to "most athletic humans" to further suggest a hybrid of strength and athleticism - that's what is unique to American football players, in my opinion. And what makes them tackling you at full-speed absolutely terrifying.
