Patriots release Maurice Harris

Jordan Matthews >>> Moe Harris.

Bill was too impatient with Matthews/his recovery; it's a shame, because I still feel that he could've helped here last season.

Matthews had 21 yards per game last season, making him slightly better than Dorsett and much worse than Hogan.

The Patriots have released WR Maurice Harris from IR with an injury settlement. Upon getting healthy, he's free to sign with a new team.

I get the signing and the release, they did an amazing job of building this WR corps this offseason, and he wasn’t going to make a team he started out as a #3 at.

I think that less is thought of him than that. The team could have put him on the 53 and then put him on IR, as injury insurance. Belichick didn't bother.

It wasn't mentioned, but Harris was Waived/Injured. Meaning if he clears waivers, he will revert to our IR and be done for the year unless he is given an injury settlement.

Patriots Release Maurice Harris With Injury Settlement; What That Means
Harris subsequently agreed to an injury settlement.
So he is no longer on IR with the Patriots. He is free to sign with another team.
He can only re-sign with the Patriots six weeks after the terms of his injury settlement expire. The settlement would be for the number of weeks that they agree he needs to recover.

yes

I would note that we had the option of putting Harris on the 53, and then put him on IR. We would then have retained rights to him.

Saw this one coming before we even waived him.

Thomas getting healthy enough to be taken off of PUP, Gordon coming back, and his untimely injury all contributed to that decision, I’m sure.

Once Bill decided to cast his lot with Donkey Thomas, and because the likelihood of Meyers passing through waivers unclaimed has become too risky, there was simply no more room here for Harris, healthy or otherwise. I also don't believe that Bill ever gave much serious thought to the option of cutting Phil Dorsett, either.

Fret not, however: there will be plenty of Moe Harrises - and better - available on Saturday.

so?

The issue is who will be available in midseason if we have a couple of injuries, and/or the rookies are ready for prime time.

We could have retained the rights to Harris by putting him on the 53, and then putting him on the IR on Sunday.

Not without having someone else /removed/ from the 53.

This assumes that Harris agrees.
It also would mean we have to cut a player who would otherwise make the 53 and risk losing him just for the sake of keeping a wr7 in the event we get decimated by injuries.
I doubt such a move has ever been done.

Maybe Bill is being told that Meredith will be available as soon as he is eligible to be removed from the Reserve/PUP list, so placing Harris on a similar list isn't an efficient use of roster limits?

The team has 6 WRs that it thinks more of, and has moved on. The team has a potential 7th WR on PUP, meaning that a failure among the top 6 would still leave another receiver, not named Harris, to look to. I'm not really understanding the seeming need of people to find a way around that.

I hadn't considered the Meredith element but that's a very good point you bring up.

After the initial excitement post-signing, things went quiet on the Meredith front (and understandably so, he hasn't done anything ... yet).

That said, if he's going to be healthy relatively soon he could be an interesting piece given his talent. I wouldn't be shocked to see him later in the season if someone gets dinged up or Harry/Meyers hit the proverbial "rookie wall".

And this season aside, I expect he'll be contending for a roster spot next season (assuming health).

Basically the Pats PUPd Harris even though they were not able to. Smart....
