I thought bill liked taking the ball at kickoff because the fans weren’t in their seats yet
Hm. Hadn’t thought about that. I’ve gone to plenty of playoff games and had never left my seat empty at kickoff. How freaking pathetic is that? If chiefs fans are that bad, then sure lol

I fear that at some point in the game, Mahomes is going to get the ball. Oh man, we’re screwed if that happens
Not if he’s already behind in the score.

Who cares? Most overrated part of football.

In the last 5 Super Bowls, I think the Pats are 0-3 when kicking first and 2-0 when receiving first.

Kick. When you’re in a notoriously loud stadium in the playoffs, the loudest it will ever be is on that first drive. Let them settle a bit before Brady has to start making calls.

This is the correct answer. A three and out for KC on the first drive will reduce the crowd noise a bit when Brady & Co take the field on offense.

Despite the Chief's sexy offense, I say kick first. Too many times (not last week) I've seen the Pats go 3 and out on the opening drive. What this does is give KC two advantages. They not only take possession right off, but will take possession in the critical 3rd quarter. A double whammy. It's always better to work before you play, rather than vice-versa.

i think the weather plays into it, meaning that punts just wont have the same distance in the cold, so it might be:

kick it: ideally stop them and when they punt, we start our drive somewhere further than the 25
receive it: pretty much start at the 25

My order of preference:

1.) Defer - Just to mess with their heads a bit if the wind is howling.
2.) Kick off - Upside is getting the ball to start the 2nd half (as well as the double dip drives).
3.) Receive - Upside is if we score first and play with a lead.

My immediate reaction is to kick, of course...

but against KC, on the road... If KC gets the ball first and scores, that crowd will be going absolutely ANIMAL and you're immediately in a deficit on the road in a hostile environment against a team that led the league in sacks

On the other hand, the crowd is going to be animal at the kickoff anyways.. so if you receive, you're dealing with that initial opening madness of the crowd who just got into their seats after hours of tailgating, drinking and pumping themselves up. So you could kick and go on defense to start it out, BUT YOU BETTER ****ING STOP THEM ON THAT OPENING DRIVE! Plus the added benefit of getting the ball to start the half, after you've had 2 quarters to see what they're throwing at you and make adjustments.

There really is no right or wrong answer, there are pros and cons to both choices that ultimately come down to how the players execute anyways

I think if they win the toss, they might either kick or receive. Just my opinion. Conversely, if the Chiefs win the toss, they're likely to either kick or receive. Let me know what you think.

Thanks Madden!

I thought "receive" went pretty well for us last week, so I'm going with that. It would be good, if this is going to be a shoot-out, to get in the first shot IMO.

How can receiving the kick be overrated when NE wins each time?

Better not use any timeouts, too. Better yet, to really screw with their heads the entire team should kneel.

Just imagine Jim Nantz's head exploding on CBS.

The opposite.

He likes getting the ball after the half, because not all the fans have returned to their seats to start the third quarter. Everyone is in their seats for kickoff.

Looked at the 17 Chiefs games this year, they only received the ball to start 6 times.

-3 drives were TDs
-3 drives no points were scored (2 Punts and a Fumble)
