Bedard really should just shut up and let Miguel handle of the cap stuff. I don't need to hear garbage like the team "not being able to make payroll" just because they had only 1m in cap space.

who we trading for?:D

I wonder whether the Patriots will use some of this cap space to kick the tyres on Terrelle Pryor. He's just been released by the Jets but he's been productive this season catching touchdowns while dealing with injuries. He's 6ft 4in and could develop into a useful weapon for the Patriots under some top coaching. We are one big WR injury away from being mediocre again. Pryor is currently injured but could be back in a couple of weeks. I'd be interested in signing him for the rest of the season. Pryor will have other teams calling but catching TDs from Brady will either make it a must to extend him next season or he'll be able to earn more millions from another NFL team.

Is that what Bedard wrote in the article? I don't have a subscription to BSJ, so I didn't see that. AFAIK, the "needed to meet expected cap responsibilities" (leaving it at that) is roughly in sync with what Miguel was saying. I'm guessing that referred primarily to things like weekly roster bonuses.

Use cap space and a roster spot to "kick the tires"? Who do you cut for this "tryout" when there are already five WRs on the roster?

I mean, it's not as if the Pats have been ignoring this guy for the past seven seasons. They've seen his tape - lots of it. They know what he can and can't do.

He is journalist and not a blogger and as such should know to be more precise with this words and not rely on context as in "of course I was talking about the cap".

Moreover nobody is laughing at other teams for doing restructures. The issue is only if you start doing this regularly in addition to contracts that are not easily sheddable (i.e. the Saints until 2016) which lands you in cap hell with no further flexibility.

This entire paragraph is just stupid.

It would have made sense before Gordon/Edelman became available. Now, not so much.

Kudos to Miguel for suggesting this a while ago... great foresight, we have come to expect this from our resident cap guru.

I’m confident we will plug all these holes.

Gronk out for back issues is a death blow
So, I guess we need another Herculean tight end. Oops, aren’t any.

Better build the D. We’re not scoring 40 a game without gronk. Restructure Allen and get Kelce from the chiefs

I don't understand what you're talking about here, other than quoting some random Twitter account (who may be you, I don't know) in order to get Very Mad at Bedard for some reason. Because of roster bonuses and other incentives, the Patriots would not have been able to meet their cap obligations until they freed space. This move was necessary for the Patriots to meet their cap obligations and doesn't necessarily signify anything else.

Are you just angry he used the term "payroll" in this one blog post that nobody else here has even read, which could imply (if you're inclined to dishonest readings) the Patriots wouldn't have the cash to pay everyone? This seems like a bizarre canard.

It is not me. The only reason I quote him is because he posted a screenshot of the article Bedard wrote.

I think it is pretty self evident what happened. Bedard sensed a way to sensationalize something that was not out of the ordinary or an overly complicated cap situation to generate maybe some more subscribers for his glorified blog.

There is a vast difference between "meeting payroll", "being broke" and "being tight in terms of cap". And him being a journalist you'd think he would chose his words more precisely and not appear like a PatsFans.com poster who has no clue about cap management.

Question for the cap people.

If Brady and Gronk don’t hit their incentives does that come off the salary cap next year?

The first thing he does is provide a link to Miguel's article (entitled Patriots are up against the cap), and the bullet above the one quoted refers to them being up against the cap. You're just engaging in a dishonest cherrypick to find something be outraged about.

Agree ..imagine the headline on BSPN Patriots can’t make payroll and are broke.

I’m sorry but the guy is a hack..
