Shock night might not be over: Butler rumours

Butler isn't Sherman or whatever other super shut down top CB one could name. But making mistakes does not mean his good value to the team isn't obvious. The Patriots don't have to have shut down corners (though it would be nice --though its not currently practical) they just need CBs who make the solid majority of passes competitively defensed.

One of those above Butler is in good position -- the WR just made a damn fine play. It happens. If Butler, Gilmore, JBad, Rowe, Jones etc can be in that kind of general position with a pass coming to their man then we should be in pretty good shape over a 60 minute game.

Butler is better than Sherman at this point in their careers.

That play in Super Bowl 49 was ok too.

If they trade Butler I'll be freakin' pissed, sick to my stomach. I'd rather have him than Gilmore.

*MAYBE* Calvin Johnson level trade and I'd be placated. Maybe.

I'm hoping this is just a stupid bs rumor and nothing comes of it.

I've prepared myself mentally for him leaving in the offseason. I thought all Pats fans had. I would be shocked if he came back. But a trade right now sinks their SuperBowl chances this year. Pointless given their QB situation. Their window is shrinking. Look no further than the AFC East if you want to understand how difficult is is to get an above average QB in this league. Most teams go decades without one. Once Brady is gone we are going to have a tough hill to climb and their are no guarantees we get back to contender status. Let's make the most of the next few years.

***SURPRISE TRADE***

How about the Pats trade Gilmore for a DL?

I only suggest this because, so far, Bademosi has been a huge surprise so far and also held his own against 2 talented WR teams in the Falcons and Chargers. We also have Rowe coming back and we can also give Butler the contract he deserves.

I could deal with the Pats trading Butler, since the Seymour, Mankins and Collins trades have desensitized me somewhat.

Butler and a high 2nd round pick? Better be a big, big return.

Thing is with Butler he is getting the experience to go with the talent. I know it is a business but count me as one dude that does NOT want to see him go...

I could see BB shopping at the bargain bin today using lower round/future picks...and the SF #2 allows BB to trade back recouping those picks

Unless they feel Gilmore and Butler are like oil & water, and that Butler needs to go for Gilmore to emerge, this reads like media generated ******** to me. Like a source said, "sure Butler is available, everyone is available" and the story picked up from there.

Would hate to see Butler go, but the reality is that he will most likely be gone this offseason... same as Jimmy. The truth is that Butler, Bademosi and Jones have looked like a pretty decent group - so BB may feel that he can swap Butler for Gilmore (assuming Gilmore is all good again) and not have a talent drop-off. Plus, Rowe will be back. Another consideration is that perhaps Butler and Gilmore just weren’t mixing from an ego standpoint. I don’t think either guy would openly cause a problem, but they may have found that there was too much tension with two guys out there wanting to be “the guy”.

Now that Jimmy has been traded the Patriots can franchise Butler should they choose to and I think if they can't get a long term deal finalised then the Pats will franchise Butler and then get one final year of play from Butler or trade him for a decent pick.

I would hope they'll get a long term deal done but the Pats currently have good depth at CB.

Not gonna happen.

This would go down as the worst free agency signing the pats have ever had considering the dead money they would eat by trading Gilmore.

Butler would be insane to sign and not test the market in free agency.

This is what I think is going to happen. The team would have to be absolutely brain dead to trade Butler mid-season with the health of Rowe and Gilmore up in the air. I think he stays through 2017 and then gets franchised.

If the rumors are true and BB was willing to pay Jimmy starter money to stick around shouldn't the Jimmy trade free up future funds to pay butler?

Jason La Canfora continues to hear that the Patriots are open to trading CB Malcolm Butler ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. La Canfora adds that the Patriots could attempt to paid Butler and the 2018 second-round pick they’ve acquired from the 49ers in return for a quality player.

Umm....Butler IS a quality player.

.

Butler is such a smart CB. Him trying to ouch the ball out of Gordon's hands was just like, a great display of on the spot thinking.

He immediately knew the ASJ ruling was a fumble.

His persistence to play till the last absolute microsecond is great. One of my favorite plays of all time is his follow through on OBJ endzone catch.

I want him to stay so bad. I love Butler.

He is the prototypical Patriot. Smart, plays far above his athletic ability, plays at 150%, knows the system inside and out, comes up big when the chips are down and others shrivel.

Why the hell didn't they give him the long-term contract instead of throwing $65 million ($40 million guaranteed) at the show pony? He would've taken half of that and we could have had another stud FA with the savings.

Ask Butler's agent?

I don't understand why Gilmore is hated so much on this board.
It's going to be great to watch him shut people down and watch the board back peddle as smooth as Gilmore can.
