RUMOR: Revis "to hit the market?"

Some Comments on the Comments

1. I was dead wrong in my prediction that something would be done by Friday. I completely misread what the Pats basic off sea\son strategy would be.

2. Evidently the Pats decided early on NOT to bid against themselves and allow the market to sort things out. So the silence I "thought" was the Pats working diligently behind the scenes to get thing done with Revis and McCourty, instead was them allowing the market to set itself during the legal tampering phase, and then on Monday make their best offers to McCourty and Revis and hope for the best. I have to say that that's not what I would have done, but then again I don't run the most successful professional sports organization on the planet

3. For the millionth time, paying Revis more than $14MM/yr is insanity, since that is what the best CB's in the league are making now. THAT's the top of the market, and you DON'T give more to a CB who is significantly older, smaller, and less gifted physically than the guys who just set the top of the market, even if he too is an elite CB right now

4. That being said, I'd give Revis a 3 yr fully guaranteed $36MM contract in a NY minute. I'd give him a 3yr $42MM contract with $36MM guaranteed just as fast. If he want's more years, I'd give him what he wants, but I wouldn't go over $36MM guaranteed or $14MM/yr

5. Should we lose Revis, we wouldn't be as good at CB as we would have with him. It's as simple as that. However ONE player on defense cannot dictate how good or bad it will be. The money that would have gone to him will go to other places. Say, for example, if CB production goes down 15% with the loss of Revis, would it be unreasonable to expect a 15% increase in production out of the LB's with the continuing development of Highttower and Collins, plus the healthy return of Mayo. Or a 10% improvement in the DL play with the continued improvement of Siliga and Easley plus whoever else we add now that we've cut $20MM of cap costs. So while losing Revis isn't ideal, we are a long way from "all is lost"

6. I doubt very much we will have to wait long to see what happens. Should Revis and McCourty reach FA on Tuesday, we should know by Friday where they end up. That being said, my predictive skills have been a bit off recently. ;)
I don't think we're looking at the loss of one player. What about McCourty and Wilfork? Also,
Browner is due a signing bonus. Other possible losses include Connelly, Vereen, Ayers, Amendola,
and Branch.
7. One last point. This team has been very successful the last 15 years. In fact their success has been UNPRECIDENTED. However I can think of only 2 or 3 years where the Pats were ever considered a "winner" in the off season acquisition of FA's. It also should be noted that the Jets have won the off season award MANY times.

So while if things don't go the way we all hope, I hope most of us will avoid the meltdown that sure to ensue in the media and wait for the dust to settle. And the interesting thing about that is that we have come to learn that sometimes the "dust doesn't settle" until October. ;)

I don't think the Bills have the cap space to sign Revis now, the Jet's however are a different story.

Is there a contract clause I don't know about requiring Revis to play in the AFCE?

I would think PHI would be a bidder for Revis and/or McCourty.

An excellent reminder, Ken.

That said, it should also be noted that the moves the Patriots made during last year's offseason (Revis, Browner, LaFell) went a LONG way towards making them more competitive and filling some obvious weaknesses.

Philly just signed Maxwell, they won't sign Revis. The Bills don't have the room anymore. It's really between the Patriots and Jets.

Well, PHI just signed CB Byron Maxwell to a large contract--so that likely removes them from bidding for Darrelle Revis.

The time has come to play screw around. Pay the bonus and retain Revis for one year
or dump him quick and overpay McCourty.

I think Philly just signed Maxwell, I'd be surprised if they are in for Revis....McCourty, I agree with you, looks like them and the Giants are making a hard push for him.

I highly doubt that it's "just" between the Jets/Pats, but that's just my opinion.

There's absolutely no reason whatsoever that another team with significant cap room can make a nice offer that would make him think twice.

If you want to whittle it down to a team with cap room AND competitiveness, the IND Colts could be an excellent choice. They've been tied into many top named free agents so far--at least in the media.

I suggested that PHI, with $50M of cap room available, might pay for Revis and Maxwell, or McCourty and Maxwell.

This is considered impossible.

Yet, haven't posters suggested that the patriots should have been able to sign Revis and McCourty, even though we have $15M of cap room without the two.

I will suggest again that if it were ever possible for the patriots with their $15M to sign Revis and McCourty, then it is at least possible that PHI might take the same view and want to sign Revis and Maxwell or McCourty and Maxwell.

I agree that McCourty is more likely than Revis.

You stated that you felt that Philly was a possibility for Darrelle Revis--not Devin McCourty.

The fact that they just filled that position (with a high priced contract at CB that pays double digit AAV ) in Maxwell, suggests to me that they are likely not contenders for Darrelle Revis.

As you said--the position of safety with Devin McCourty could be a much different situation, and also a much greater possibility. I just don't personally see them bringing in TWO high priced CBs, that's all. I obviously could be way off base with my opinion, and you may be correct.

Yeah, Curran has been pretty good in recent months.

I agree, and I'll even take it one step further and say that Curran is generally a good reporter. I realize that I may place him a bit higher than the average reader, however, but I think he's decent.

After 30 hours of tampering, it seems a very good bet Pats will retain either Revis or McCourty and a pretty good bet they keep both.

For what its worth

So, Curran is saying that there has been lots of illegal tampering with regard to Revis?

Or is Curran saying that 2 days of legal tampering gives us information on bot Revis and Mccourty,

This is my bet: Patriots pay 16M per year, 5 years contract, spread the signing bonus (big bonus) this is really a 3 year contract with an option of 2 more where the pats are in good position, dont take the option after the 3rd year when Revis is 33 years old, everybody win.

Yes, you are right that you did include McCourty as well, but I was addressing the "Darrelle Revis" portion of your post.

As I said in my response, you may end up being correct, but I think most of us feel as though Revis is a bit out of PHI's reach now with their decision to go after the "sure thing" with Maxwell, while making him a well compensated CB in the meantime.

There can't be tampering with revis..which is why i am not sure he brought up revis name..mccourty yes

Technically there isn't supposed to be tampering with Revis, however both Reiss and Florio have both suggested that this has been occurring, and is generally a widespread practice in the NFL.
