Harvin at 34

I'd pass on Harvin completely. If you're too dumb to realize by smoking chronic the week before the Combine you're going to get caught, or, worse, you just don't give a damn, or, even worse, you couldn't control yourself and resist smoking, then you're not a guy I want on my team. Sorry.

On top of his lunatic (as Mayock called it) drug test failure, this Percyland thing his teammates use to describe the surreal world focused on one person - himself - that Harvin walks around in speaks of diva before the dude even catches one NFL pass. No thanks.

I got panned for having the Pats trade up from 58 to 51 to get Harvin when he fell in my last mock, and was a bit surprised byt he board reaction. Harvin has issues, but he is clearly one of the pre-eminent playmakers in the draft. I wouldn't go for him at 34 because there are too many other areas to address, but I do think that if he fell he could have value.
Yeah, if he falls to round 6 or 7. Trading up to 51 for him is crazy.

THC can be detected in a normal urinanalysis for about six weeks. If he failed other tests while at UF, (a) I'd be more concerned, and (b) BB would know about it, so (c) I won't be worried if BB takes him.

I'd love to see Pat White and Percy Harvin on the field at the same time.

Would you take Percy Harvin at 34 if he is on the board?

I assume you haven't seen the report on ESPN that Harvin failed the drug test at the combine for marijuana?

Which is why he's going to be available at 34. If he didn't fail the test he might not have even be available at 23. It depends who else is available at 34 but he makes a good value pick at 34 if everything checks out with BB talking to Urban Myers.

If you write him off completely than you will be sorry if he goes to the Phins or Jets in round 2. I wouldnt take him at #34 but I would at #47 or #58.

I wouldn't touch Harvin with a ten foot pole. PacMan Version 2.0

Amen! I could not agree more. Someone will reach out take him, hopefully they can commit the resources and time necessary to hopefully turn his life around.

BB does not seem to have the time to spare on projects like these guys.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. He is simply too good to pass up. Too explosive, too fast, too versatile. Think about what he can do on screens, swing routes, coming out of the backfield, and in the return game. According to Pat Kirwan, any contract he signs will have a drug clause in it that will protect the Pats if he gets suspended. Most importantly, BB's relationship with Urban Meyer, Florida, and Harvin in particular will come up big. BB and Meyer have become much closer since the Chad Jackson fiasco, and according to Harvin BB has spoke to him numerous times and coached him when he visits Gainesvile. I think its a done deal we draft Harvin at 34 if he's there. Plus, the rest of the draft shakes out that getting an OLB, ILB, DL, DB, and OL help at 23 and later.

Tak these 2 scenarious for example:
23. Larry English OLB/Rey Maualuga ILB
34. Harvin
47. Clint Stintim OLB&ILB
58. Fiola Miola/Jarron Gilbert DEs
89. Andy Levitre/Kraig Urbik/Trevor Canfield. Versatile OLs
97. Jerraud Powers CB /Darcel McBath S

All needs covered. boom.

I heard a commentator last night say that he lives in "Persyland". You have no idea what is going though that head but it's all about Persy.

Bill usually focuses on situational football. Odd he forgot to coach this kid up on laying off the weed through the combine... He starts his career off in the pee in a cup program. If he didn't have the capacity or discipline to mind his business pre combine he's an increased risk to not have that capacity pre season. The next time he gets caught he misses a game. Time after that it's 4.

Football matters is Bill's motto. Language can preclude your losing bonus $$$, it can't refund the opportunity lost to get value in the form of a talented player to whom football matters. Some team with seemingly desperate need and standards rationalized accordingly will take him on.

If Harvin is available at #23, YES. He'll be the BPA at the spot for us.

Are teams allowed to talk to the player after their visit? Let's say the Pats were interested in Harvin, and then they see this report, can they call him up and talk with him further, or can contact only be made on designated visits?

I like Harvin's skills and playmaking ability, but a little too much risk at 23. All for it at 34 though.

No way we take Percy Harvin at #23, he probably won't even go in the 1st rd. I can't see BB taking him at #34 either, even with all his talent and potential.

I'm still trying to shake off the hangover from Chad Jackson.......No I wouldn't expect to see him here as a Patriot.......however, BB and Urban are close........so I guess you never know....

Why wouldn't we? He'd be perfect in our system. If BB's got him rated high and he's available, it'd be foolish not to pick him. We should pick BPA with our 23rd pick. And BB has always pointed out that that's what he does.

Oh, I'm not arguing with your statement of taking BPA, hell I'm not even arguing about taking Harvin--you could very well be right.

I just don't personally see Harvin getting taken in the 1st rd, he had been on the cusp of 1st-2nd even before his positive drug test.

I think you have to choose a relatively 'safer' type pick with your 1st rounder, and I think BB believes in this theory also. Percy Harvin is not a 'safe' pick anymore, especially in the 1st round. He has started his career by proving he can't even put down the weed for a couple weeks, knowing damn well it would cost him millions, and that he would get tested months ahead of time. I mean, c'mon!

He will most likely get picked someone in the range of Chad Jackson, that is why this thread is titled "Harvin at 34?."

Choosing him at 34 is a stretch, and a gamble, especially after the C.Jackson fiasco, not to mention they both came from the same school, and play the same position. A lot of people still are ticked off about that terrible pick at a high 2nd rd. I think if Harvin were around at 47, (which he won't be) then it would be a legitimate argument. I don't think BB touches him even at 34, but someone else will, and he may end up being the next drug positive, good player who slides--like Warren Sapp.

The whole draft is somewhat of a gamble, but he wasn't projected in the 1st even before his bad news, so I don't think it helped his cause any. But you could still end up being right, nothing says I know any more than you do.

All good points- The reason I asked the question is that it is obvious that he is a dynamic athlete. He has 34 value . He may be terrific in a Faulk type role. Would the Pat's be able to coach a kid like this? Yes. Would staff be able to keep him in line-yes. Is it a risk-yes. Answer is probably that if he lasts until 47-he may be worth the risk. I still think he is the surprise pick for the Steelers at 32.
