5 minutes into the 3rd quarter, Joseph Addai had 10 catches for 66 yards, 1 short of the SB record, and 17 carries for 65 yards. From that point on, he touched the ball twice. Dominic Rhodes played the rest of the way and carried 14 times. I believe the sole reason for that lopsided division of labor down the stretch was to keep a lid on Addai's performance and preserve the MVP award for Manning. Because of the decision to bench Addai, Manning did end up "deserving" the award by process of elimination. But like most things Manning and Colt related, there was an element of manipulation behind the scenes that tainted the event.
