Re: WEEI.com: Negotiating For Dummies -- What Rookies Should Expect At Bargaining Tab

Chris:

Good work. One note on injuries, though: IIRC, Reiss specifically pointed out that the NFL requires "good faith" bargaining in cases like McKenzie's. In other words, they cannot expect McKenzie to sign a contract whose structure is dramatically different compared to the one they gave Kevin O'Connell in 2008, despite the injury.

Tate's another kettle of fish entirely, of course, because he was rehabbing an injury to start with.

Finally, here are the numbers I got for the rookies (which differ a bit from Miguel's). The bold number is the signing bonus; the second number is the cap hit in 2009 (1/4 the signing bonus + $310K, the minimum rookie salary; note I've rounded off a bit, so the #s won't quite add up perfectly).

Chung: $1,850,000 $773,000
Brace: $1,650,000 $724,000
Butler: $1,620,000 $715,000
Vollmer: $1,010,000 $576,000

Tate: $755,000 $499,000
McKenzie: $639,000 $470,000

Ohrnberger: $466,000 $426,000

Bussey: $147,000 $347,000 [The SBs really seem to crater around the end of the fourth round.]
Ingram: $88,000 $332,000

Pryor: $78,000 $330,000

Edelman: $49,000 $322,000
Richard: $46,000 $322,000

Total: $8,460,000 $5,835,000
