Wanna Know What It Was Like At Sullivan Stadium in 1990?

I never had season tickets when I lived in the Boston area, but just bought one offs with buddies for two or three games a year. But, as I read the tales of the regulars, I can see now that the "real" Sullivan/Foxboro Stadium was a place for a kegger or ****tail where occasionally a competitive football game broke out. I also conclude that it's a good thing that traffic was so bad that it crawled for a few miles; probably gave people a chance to sober up and prevented a lot of accidents!

so yeah...it's a 2-14 season and we're at this game sometime in late October...anyway, there's these really dark ominous clouds hanging over Lot 17 that morning but we don't give a crap...we got tent tops set up, grills out, coolers, tapped kegs...;.all the vehicles lined up in the first row looking out onto RT 1...over there is the sausage and peppers and over here gigantic shrimp ****tails....smoky meats permeate the air...deep guttural cries of "PATRIOTS!!!!!!!!!" split the air every few minutes...footballs whizz by in the air...frisbees clanging into cars out of nowhere....it was tribal...the same crew every game, a good 50 strong in the exact same spot....through decades or so it seemed.

This day we all march into the stadium en masse headed to our seats, my section was 206 at that time...game starts and so does the rain...and we're getting soaked....then suddenly a loud crack...lightening strikes all over the place...metal benches...it starts to sleet...then snow...we're getting murdered by some upper echelon team....stomping up and down on the benches screaming at FG tries, passing the ginger brandy....OBLIVIOUS to everything going on around us....yeah, I think I spent a few days in bed with a vicious cold/hangover after THAT one...still have the photo album somewhere....best days ever.

I was at the stadium when the bathrooms would back up every game and you had to go swimming to take a squirt...ambiance i think they call it..heh...if you ever had to take a dump, well...you had to leave...for real....or else crap in your pants...

that's good...well written...thanks.

Some might remember when they installed the first video scoreboard there, because they were in a land dispute with the track owners they had to use a helicopter to fly it in and lower it into place, the track wouldn't let them drive across their property.

This is how the scoreboard ended up being over (rather than behind) the seats in the south end zone. By the way, I believe the track owners you referred to included Eddie Andelman.

You're right, I forgot that Andelman was involved, I believe he also owned alot of the property on the other side of Route 1 that Kraft eventually purchased (and where the Casino was supposed to go).

7:00. Who is the **** wearing a Jets hat to a Pats-Fins game?

I remember they had the iron spiral stairs going up to an end-zone camera, They would take pictures during the game hand them off to some kid who would run them down and pass them off to another runner on the sidelines, then over to the coaches

This is just plain awesome to see! Just listen to the crowd! No caviar and zinfandel served in crystal at that game! :rocker:

Memories.......I always had a great time there.

I really miss how loud that place used to be. :rocker:

I just spent the past 45 minutes watching the video and reading through this thread, and just want to thank everyone for reminiscing and taking time to share your awesome stories and experiences with this franchise.

I've only been a fan of the Patriots (and football, really) since 2006 or so when I really fell in love with the sport (that I was in college before this happened still saddens me - those wasted years!). So the history of the NFL and in particular the Patriots really fascinates me. By all means, please continue the trip down memory lane, I'm sure I'm not that the only one who appreciates everything that is being shared! :)

wow...I think I saw myself in one of the stands pans....Marv Cook???...my brain is doing some deep cover memory bank retrieval...

Thought I saw myself too! Excellent Youtube post!

There were some good names on that team. Not all in their prime, but they should have been better than 1-15

Granted this was the season opener so they were tied for first at the time!

But of course in my book you're not really a hardcore football fan unless you sat on the aluminum bleachers at Sullivan Stadium when it was 10 degrees supporting a 1-15 or 2-14 team.

show this to a kid 5 years from now, and he'll say "Why did the kicker not kick off out of the end zone?"

There are so many great things about that video. Everything was simple and clean, no corporate logos on the uniforms or the stadium walls. The fans were rowdy and having a good time (all the people screaming and cheering these days would be shushed by the pink hats). It was just a simpler time for the NFL.

I have been to a few games. I saw almost nobody wearing a pink hat. A couple of ladies at away games, but nobody at Gillette. I think there is something other than the color of fans hats that creates a less boisterous atmosphere.
