Getting this out of the way. Were the balls underinflated. Yes. They probably have been as long as TB has been a QB.
The issue here I believe is unwritten rules. Specifically regarding teams not ratting each other out for stuff like ball adjustments, stealing signs...etc.
But the old days are gone. The coaches, owners and GMs these days want to be part of the NFL spotlight. They do not want to be viewed as failures.
Cases in point. John Harbaugh got embarrassed by BB on the eligible receiver calls. I assure you it was too much for his delicate ego to take. Enter the Colts GM. He knew a loss was coming. What better cover than saying the Pats were cheating.
That made sense up until halftime....and the destruction that ensued.
I think Belichick's error was believing the old unwritten rules applied. That the Mangini thing was an aberration on a personal level....and now we are all paying for that.
