TSN has come out with a new version of their 7 round mock:

Sporting News - NFL - 2009 Mock Draft

For the Pats:

23. Knowshon Moreno, RB
34. Paul Kruger, DE/OLB - I don't know what all the love is for Kruger.
47. DJ Moore, CB
58. Max Unger, OG/C
89. William Moore, S - this would be amazing if it happened.
97. Morty Ivy, ILB
124. Mike Wallace, WR - a great pick.
170. Robert Brewster, OG
199. Brian Hoyer, QB
207. Doug Slavonic, DE
234. Brandon Gibson, WR

Comments for the Pats players:

23. Knowshon Moreno RB Georgia
Fred Taylor is near the end and Laurence Maroney can't stay healthy. So they grab Moreno, a big, strong inside runner who also has great hands as a receiver.

34. Paul Kruger DE Utah
(from Kansas City) They continue adding youth to their linebacker corps. Kruger can play inside or outside. He has the versatility the Pats love.

47. D.J. Moore CB Vanderbilt
(from San Diego) The Pats continue addressing their secondary by grabbing Moore. He looks like a star on film, but struggled through a bad spring to fall to the second round.

58. Max Unger C Oregon
The Pats are happy at center, but would like youth at guard. Unger has can play guard as well as center.

199. Brian Hoyer, QB
207. Doug Slavonic, DE
234. Brandon Gibson, WR

Some other notable picks:

6. Everette Brown, DE/OLB - Nolan Nawrocki and Don Banks have him dropping out of the 1st round
10. Rey Maualuga, ILB
14. Malcolm Jenkins, CB/S
17. Mark Sanchez, QB - what are they smoking? Sanchez goes top 5
24. Larry English, DE
25. Clint Sintim, LB
31. Donald Brown, RB
32. Tyson Jackson, DE - PFW has Jackson going #3
33. Louis Delmas, S
37. Clay Matthews, LB
38. William Beatty, OT
40. Percy Harvin, WR
41. Aaron Maybin, DE/LB - I doubt he drops this far
43. Connor Barwin, DE/LB
44. Darius Butler, CB
45. Hakeem Nicks, WR
48. Ron Brace, DT - hard to see him dropping this far
50. Josh Freeman, QB - what are they smoking?
51. Eric Wood, OG/C - reportedly rising fast
54. Vontae Davis, CB
59. Jarron Gilbert, DE/DT
63. Michael Johnson, DE/OLB
69. Sean Smith, CB/S
71. Lawrence Sidbury, DE
78. TJ Lang, OT/G
79. Patrick Chung, S
90. James Casey, TE
100. Jamon Meredith, OT/G
110. Jason Williams, LB
113. Chip Vaughn, S - at least they put him in their draft this time
117. Brian Robiskie, WR - this is way too low
122. Trevor Canfield, OG
145. Chris Baker, DT
179. Pat White, QB/WR - this is way too low
181. Sammie Lee Hill, DT
215. Terrance Knighton, DT

UDFA's of note:

Joe Burnett, CB - no way this happens
Devin Moore, RB
Vaughn Martin, DT
Kevin Huber, P

It's hard to argue with the Knowshon Moreno pick in terms of player quality, though I'd prefer not to see RB at 23. I'm still undecided between Donald Brown and Moreno as my top RB for the Pats.

I don't understand their infatuation with Paul Kruger. I had my eye on Kruger early as a possible DE/LB conversion, but he looked athletically limited, stiff and like a pure 4-3 DE at the combine (and reportedly the same at his pro day). I personally prefer Eric Wood to Max Unger for the Pats. And if the Pats are going to get a day 1 CB I hope it is either Malcolm Jenkins or Darius Butler.

Using their order, I would go with the following:

23. Connor Barwin OLB (or William Beatty OT)
34. William Beatty OT (or Connor Barwin OLB)
47. Eric Wood, OG/C
58. Jarron Gilbert, DE - a steal this late
89. William Moore, S - a huge steal this late
97. Brian Robiskie, WR - a monumental steal this late - no way he falls this far
124. Chris Baker, DT - a steal this late
170. Pat White, QB/WR - a huge steal this late -
199. Brian Hoyer, QB - nice developmental QB pick
207. Joe Burnett, CB - a steal this late
234. Devin Moore, RB - a steal this late
UDFA. Kevin Huber, P

That would be one heck of a draft. The first 8 players are all day 1 caliber guys, or at least top 100. All 12 could make the team.

I like your draft MUCH better, and would still prefer it even if you had another OLB @ 23.

That said, if you're not sold on the QB, you can always go with Stephen McGee (he's a UDFA in their book).

97. Morty Ivy, ILB This guy is not even rated to be drafted, yet the Pats are going to spend a 3rd rounder on him?

124. Mike Wallace, WR - a great pick.

170. Robert Brewster, OG The last time the Pats spent a 5th rounder on an OT was when they drafted Clint Oldenburg, whom many had rated as a UDFA. For some reason, Sporting News has the Pats doing the same again.. This seems to be based on the Pats bringing him in for a private workout.

199. Brian Hoyer, QB - I think its much more likely that the Pats look at someone like Mike Reilly than Hoyer. The "knock" on Reilly is supposedly his arm strength, but the positives are that he reads defenses well, reads through his progressions, willing to take the check down and can buy time in the pocket. Sound Familiar?

207. Doug Slavonic, DE Unless he projects to put on another 30 lbs, I don't see him playing DE for the Pats. At 265, that makes him an OLB.. I don't see the Pats adding Kruger AND him to an already crowded, though untested, OLB group.

234. Brandon Gibson, WR - I know its a 7th round pick, but this is a head scratcher to me. I just don't seem him as someone the Pats would consider. I think that they would look in other directions than another WR. Especially after grabbin Wallace.

I'll be honest. I don't care for this draft. I don't see the Pats bringing in another RB with the corp they already have. I think Kruger is a better 4-3 DE than a 3-4 OLB, and I think DJ Moore doesn't fit what the Pats look for in their CBs.

Not to defend their pick, but, for the record, they have Ivy as the 5th best ILB.

97. Morty Ivy, ILB This guy is not even rated to be drafted, yet the Pats are going to spend a 3rd rounder on him?

Quite possibly the worst draft I've ever seen!

Not even the worst idea I've seen this weekend (though certainly one of the worst from people who are supposed to know what they're doing).

Try this:

23. New England Patriots: CB Darius Butler, UConn
34. New England Patriots (f/KC): WR Percy Harvin, Florida
47. New England Patriots (f/SD): WR Derrick Williams, Penn State
58. New England Patriots: HB LeSean McCoy, Pittsburgh
89. New England Patriots: T Phil Trautwein, Florida
97. New England Patriots: FB Tony Fiammetta, Syracuse

As I posted on the forum where that was offered up:

I could be happy with Butler, but after that, it goes beyond "breaking the TV" bad. This would actually be "Go out and beat up puppies" bad.

I stand corrected this is the worst draft I've ever seen :D
