Is this the end of the road for Slater? Slater finished #8 in special teams tackles for New England in 2009 with 7 stops ( 6 tackles, 1 assist ). He narrowly beat out Gostkowski who had 6 stops ( 5 tackles, 1 assist ), although Gostkowski had one recovered fumble, and Slater zero.

Offensively, Slater had zero catches at WR. Defensively, Slater is at best, the #5 safety behind, Meriweather, Sanders, McGowan, and Chung. As a kick returner, Slater was tied for #34th in the NFL in yards per kickoff return. Slater does not return punts.

And your stats indicate what, exactly?

I cant name a less inspiring pats KR in my lifetime then slater. Yet rarely did they change it up. Whenever they tried wheatley, slater was scared to lose his job so he always told wheatley to stay in the endzone.

The stats help you decide. Should this be the end of the road for Slater? I am interested in your opinion.

I think Arrington's emergence will probably push Slater off the roster.

Well, gee, maybe that's because they didn't draft him specifically to be a kick returner?

Re: Slater end of the road?

    1. Slater has no place on the team aside from special teams.
    2. Slater has no place on the team as a kick returner. He's terrible.

Therefore, if Slater has a future on the team, it's purely as a ST gunner. The question is how long he can stay on the team in that role, given other guys like Lockett and Arrington who have more to offer in terms of positional support.

Re: Slater end of the road?

I apologize. Now explain what the hell me saying hes uninspiring has to do with what they drafted him for. Hes a non threat with the ball plain and simple.

This team is loaded with uninspired players who shouldn't be here.

Re: Slater end of the road?

Nothing. It's another Patsfan poster who gets defensive when you dare say anything negative about one of the players. Slater is terrible. The pats have had some hits in recent drafts, but have had just as many (if not more) misses.

With Arrington, I hope he develops into good safety. This guys definitely has a nose for ball and knows how to tackle.

No need to try and be smart, they simply indicate he bring ZERO to the party :)

Re: Slater end of the road?

I was amazed at the time that the Patriots traded up to get him

considering that he had no position at all in college. His most

noteworthy play was his fumble in the rain against Pittsburgh.

Re: Slater end of the road?

As I see it, we currently have 4 safeties on the roster in Meriweather, Chung, Sanders and McGowan. If Bodden comes back we have 5 CBs in Bodden, Butler, Wheatley, Wilhite and Springs. So unless one of those guys gets cut/traded or we carry 10 DBs, there's no place on the roster for Arrington or Lockett unless they earn a spot as a pure STer, as Slater essentially did this season. I can't see us carrying more than one such guy given 3 other ST positoins used for K, P and LS.

Re: Slater end of the road?

The fact that a) Wheatley was inactive pretty much every game.

And b) If a player gets a ball 4 yards deep, it's unlikely he gets back to the 20 so they are always waved back by the up-returner also means that your facts are ridiculous.

Slater is a very good Special Teamer. He and Arrington were the first 2 down there every game to end the season. They are a quick combo.

Not to mention Slater's kick return against the Ravens.

The first time he used his speed to switch the field and he gets to halfway. If he done that more often, he'd be better for it.

Re: Slater end of the road?

Explain Eric Alexander to me as well.

Hell, i'd keep Adalius Thomas as a 4th ILB if we had to. With his body type, he can get his backside on Special Teams, he should be good at that.

Let him come to camp and compete with the rest of the scrubs. Who cares? Whoever wants it more, let's have some major competition and participation.

I've got no problem taking a shot on potential but it mystify's me what we thought he had that dozens of cuts every year don't.

Ditto except for the draft pick part. Let's throw them out there and keep the hungriest.

Might be time to look for a special teams coach too. Anybody like the way teams looked this year?

Re: Slater end of the road?

Teams are drafting Special Teams players in late rounds.

If we'd taken Slater with the 6th round pick, would it have made a difference to you?

There was obviously no-one we wanted left in the draft so does it matter where he was drafted anymore?

He's an intelligent guy, runs hard and plays Special Teams very well.

There's no point having 50 guys who are great in their position if they all suck at the 3rd phase of the game. You need 5 guys who can play Special Teams excellently to solve that phase of the game.
