Like to remind everyone that by 4PM on September 4 the Pats will have to account for everyone on their cap which will take up some cap space.

players 52, 53 - 810K.

11 players on IR - $3.293 million.

If they chose to pay Armsteand and Harrison who are on R-NFI that's another 810K

Also add the cost of having a 8-man practice squad - at least $816K. PS players make a minimum of 6K a week or $102K a year

But aren't the Patriots going to be well under the cap?

Obviously, there are uses for that money, notably:

  • Further pickups.
  • New contracts for guys (genuine).
  • Rolling over the money to future years (through bogus new contracts).

Great post for added perspective on the salary cap as usual. Thanks Miguel.

Yes, the Pats are going to be well under the cap. Just like to remind people that some of the $13 million in cap space is soon going to be used. The new CBA eliminated the need for bogus new contracts.

Another use - have a cushion for NTLBE incentives that the Pats would like to be reached aka Amendola and Talib's per game roster bonuses, Vollmer's playing time incentive.

Patriots TE Michael Hoomanawanui has agreed to a pay-cut.
It appears Hoomanawanui has slashed his salary from $1.323 million to $650,000. He likely would have been cut if not for the "restructuring." Hoomanawanui surprisingly appeared in 14 games last season, but won't catch many passes behind Rob Gronkowski and Zach Sudfeld.
