OK, this doesn't count as anything but a rumour and I don't read NY News so this dude could be a hack for all I know, but here it is.

If that were to happen, I would welcome Charlie Weis back.

But who knows if he wants to come back to New England.

    Don't tell NEM..

OTOH this sounds really farfetched and the sign of an overactive imagination of a scribe... that is a lot of moving around.

This seems Moss-ish to me, in the sense that Brady could have a lot of influence here. How old is Weis, anyway? Any chance he'd just retire?

This seems far fetched to me but I would love Charley back and yes one would think Brady would be clamoring for this.

I am not sure of his age but I think he is young enough where I doubt he is thinking retiring. He has been thru alot the past few years from the Bypass to his getting the head coach Job to his ACL this year...he may want a year off before returning if he were to get canned.

Makes sense that Gruden would go to ND. His dad was a coach there. Gruden was recruited by them, but chose to go to school elsewhere because he didn't think he would get playing time. There is a legacy with Gruden.

Charlie coming back would be the best option for the Pats. I'm not as enamored with the guy as many on the board, but he is still a very good OC.

I could see this happening. It almost seems like a scenario that is too perfect.

ND gets the coach they want and need, we get an OC and Weis returns to the place and role in which he belongs.

No way he retires if he can work. He wants to make a LOT of money, because he has a learning-disabled kid to provide for.

He's in his early 50's, younger than Belichick by a few years. I doubt he'd consider retirement, and I think Belichick, Kraft, and Brady would all welcome him back.

So I wonder if no OC replacement is named within the next few weeks, if that will make this rumour seem a little more substantial?

I think it Weis is fired and Gruden it hired, it will happen in a week or two. Isn't the date to submit commitment letters due soon anyway. I don't know if ND wants that date to come and go without making the change if they are.

I don't buy that part of the story.

This commitment letter thing seems farfetched, which is not surprising hen it comes from a member of the NY media. They know nothing about college football.

When a coach leaves, kids are let out of their commitment letters these days. Notre Dame could not get away with something like this.

The truth is, the players have more to fear from a coach leaving than Notre Dame has to fear from players looking elsewhere. It really is very late in the process for players to secure a scholarship unless they are the very blue of the blue chips. Sometimes coaches have reneged on scholarships with a coaching change. That's why I don't buy that part of Cimini's story. He has it reversed.

It might but when you figure last time we replaced OC we left the spot open for a year it shouldn't.

Let's review: ND signed Weis to an extension valued at at least $30 MM in 2005: Notre Dame extends Weis through 2015 - College Football - ESPN

So now they're willing to let him go for at least $21 MM and sign another coach for God knows how much?

Good for Gruden, and good for ND if they pull it off, but I'd be shocked if they could absorb that kind of financial hit.

Read the other article on this page about Weis.

They are not on the hook to him for much. College extensions are not valued the same way as the pros. In college, the coaches get paid a smaller amount as salary (in Weis's case, he gets $500k a year) and then they make the rest of their package through speaking fees, coaches clinics and especially a clothing deal, as with Nike.

ND would be on the hook for $500k and 6 more years.

Charlie's ND contract provided enough money for Charlie, his children and his gradchildren for life.

That being said, Charlie likes coaching.

BTW, I don't expect Charlie to come back. He remembers how hard-nosed the patriots were about give him what he considered reasonable pay when he was thinking of leaving. There is no particular reason for him to come back. He can make plenty of money elsewhere in at least as good situation.

If he becomes available, you can bet that Tom Brady will put in a call to Charlie. I would love to have him back.

Thanks for setting me straight. Still a sizable amount of money, though. If ND feels it's worth it, that says a lot.
