Day 2, 1st practice

The story of today's first practice was a solid hit from linebacker Tedy Bruschi on rookie running back Laurence Maroney on a screen pass. The hit knocked Maroney off his feet and had the defense excited.

Maroney spoke with reporters after practice and said he had a feeling the hit was coming. Earlier in the practice, Maroney himself delivered a powerful blow to outside linebacker Chad Brown that knocked Brown's helmet off.

The plays came when the team was working in 11-on-11 drills. That was the portion of practice with the most contact.

Bruschi had previously delivered a hard hit on Maroney in a Friday practice.

We'll have more in a bit, after Bill Belichick's 11:20 a.m. press conference.

EXTRA POINT: At the end of the morning practice, receivers Troy Brown, Chad Jackson and Bam Childress, and tight ends Benjamin Watson and Garrett Mills jogged onto the practice field in their workout gear. They didn't participate in the morning practice, but joined the team at the end of the workout.

We'll have a bit more later in the day. The next practice is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
