are college players allowed to not enter the nfl draft go straight into the nfl and then sign with any team they want the next season? I know this is probably a stupid question but honestly i have no clue

I'm not sure what you are asking, but a player can declare after the regular draft deadline and enter the supplemental draft where teams bid the following year's draft choices. Closest thing would be what Jeff Demps did, declare but not do any of the predraft stuff and focus on something other than football then come back to football.

what i mean is say someone like geno smith was like i dont waant to be on the chiefs so he decided to go directly to the cfl instead and then came back to the nfl a year later to sign with any team he wanted too

The question itself is kind of unclear, but I think you may be asking about a player who is drafted and refuses to play with that specific team, right?

In that rare case I believe that he would actually go through the drafting process again. He would not automatically be an UDFA who could sign with any team as far as I understand.

sorry about explaining it basically can a player decide to not even enter the nfl draft and go straight to the cfl so that after a season he can come back to the nfl and sign with any team he wants too

Good question. I don't know if we've ever seen any instance like that to be honest.

CFL and NFL honor each other's contracts, maybe the UFL. Closest situation is probably when the USFL existed and had players drafted by the NFL that chose to go the USFL route, the AFL/NFL before the common draft would also be another example.

Demps was undrafted so he could sign with any team. If a player is undrafted he can chose the team he wants.

If an NFL team drafts a player they have exclusive rights no matter if the player signs with the CFL or another pro league.

Example: Craig James, was drafted by the Patriots. He went on to the other league for a few years, but the Patriots retained the NFL rights to him.

I'm not sure how many years the NFL team has those rights.

ok so if a player wants to go the cfl he can go but he can have his nfl rights drafted so when he comes back he has to report to that team ok thanks
