Tully Banta Cain is the Patriots' best defender.
Source: random ass calculations.
This guy has become the whipping boy du jour. IMO he had many more positive plays than negative ones. Is he a Pro Bowl caliber DB? Probably not, but he's not a bum, either.
he may not be good at covering one on one but there are not to many safetys in the NFL there are thats way they play safety and not CB... the one thing that will not show up in any stat sheet is he was the only guy on the pats defense that anyone feared
I have a question, who will be the new LoMo once Meriweather leaves town? This board always needs some player to **** on.
I don't see why. The only thing he's good at is getting too much credit. Brandon has had ample opportunity to show that he can contribute. He can't. He takes terrible routes to balls, is constantly out of position and isn't particularly bright. Yeah, he can run fast but so can a lot of guys. I'd rather see the Pats cut the cord with this guy and develop the next man up.However, I fully agree that it makes perfect sense for the Patriots to keep Meriweather for the 2011 season. He is inexpensive. He is athletic. Maybe a change of coaches will help him.
So, you own stock in that site?
And, for the record, Meriweather led all safeties in number of snaps. So, no, PFF's interpretation would NOT fit with what happened during the season.
The first sentence has become my reaction, too. Crowell tries so hard in the doomed endeavor of pimping PFF that I have trouble taking anything that he says on any topic seriously anymore.
And yes, if Meriweather was the worst defender, he wouldn't be on the field as much as he is, since safety is a position of strength, depth-wise. Given some of the guys that we had starting due to injury at various points in the season, trying to peg Meriweather as the worst is just stupid.
I think it's more the expectations of being a starting-caliber DB on a good team. Especially when we're used to Milloy, Rodney, etc. Hell I'd even take Geno Wilson back over this guy. It's the same problem as Maroney and Watson, the expectations that come with a 1st rounder. Neither were really bad when they were here (though Maroney has gone on to do nothing), but we were hoping for stars with those picks.
