Pats in/had discussion with Hartwell (per MetroWest Daily News)

Aren't both of Hartwell's kness shot? That's pretty scary. If he's truly got no knees, he's gonna get beat off the ball unless he can play through some major pain. Bone on bone ain't easy to run on.

Do you have a link to this?? I can’t seem to find much on his injuries.

I have been hoping that they would bring Hartwell in, I just question if he is "smart" enough for the Pats stable.

BTW: thanks for the link (to whoever started this thread); I emailed the columnist for more specific details (I'll let you all know if he responds).

More crap, just like the davinci code and the tombs of jesus's family.

Actually, no, these are people who are doing real research into the text to identify who said what, when, in order to root out misinterpretations and translation errors that have ocurred over the hundreds of years that the text has been modified. So these folks aren't making stuff up or interested in drama, but in peer reviewed scholarly research.

Mike Reiss in his mailbag says Hartwell signing unlikely:

Q: Edgerton Hartwell's name surfaced about a week ago. Has there been any word about him since then?

A: As part of the process of exploring possibilities for his client, Hartwell's agent, Harold Lewis, spoke with the Patriots about whether they would consider Hartwell. I don't believe the Patriots have expressed any interest at this point in time, and don't believe that will happen in the future

Just FYI, recent research has identified the "number of the beast" as being more likely to be all 7's rather than all 6's, due to a misinterpretation of one of the many editors of the text.

Way off topic but the implications of this statement are actually pretty scary. 777 is a number that is "worshipped" in casinos across the world. That devil is a sneaky guy

And Breer said again, today:

"Linebacker Edgerton Hartwell remains on the Patriots' radar, according to a source.
Hartwell - a highly productive player over three years as a starting 3-4 inside linebacker in Baltimore (2002-04) - was besieged by injuries after signing a six-year, $25 million deal with the Falcons before the 2005 season, then cut at the outset of free agency. He did, though, finish the '07 season with six straight starts and 35 tackles in that time.
The 28-year-old is looking for a prove-it type of one-year deal to reestablish himself as a run-stopping force in the league."

Who do you believe? Reiss has always struck me as not reporting a story until it's solid and Breer and Tomase as never having met a rumor they didn't want to take home for the night.

I think it's still in the murky rumor stage. Maybe there is something to it and the Pats don't want anyone chasing their boy, so they're trying to keep a lid on it.

FYI, that's the second mailbag in a row Reiss has shot down any Hartwell rumors without hesitation, though the above poster's speculation may be on point.

I sent Breer an email last night, and his response to me was as follows:

"What I know is that there has been interest on both sides. Hartwell's
agent told me expressly that they're looking for a one-year deal, where the
linebacker could prove he can stay in one piece and go get better
security next year."

Looks like Hartwell's injuries were a little more serious then i thought... this is from the AP-

Hartwell received a four-year contract and $8.5 million signing bonus when he left Baltimore two years ago to bolster the Falcons' run defense. But he tore an Achilles' tendon in just the fifth game with his new team, knocking him out for the rest of the 2005 season.

Shortly before last season, Hartwell underwent arthroscopic surgery on both knees, delaying his return. He wound up starting only 11 games in two seasons with the Falcons.

The achilles tendon is what scares me the most. Sometimes players are never fully themselves after that injury.

Absolutley correct... That is a tricky injury to come back from. It can be nagging. Especially for football players.

A lot of guys have come back from that lately. Julian Peterson, Mike Brown, Derrick Burgess and Ronald Curry (twice) are all guys who returned from a torn achilles and still achieved a high level of play. In basketball, Vince Carter is another example.

It seems players have more success with that injury lately. The first year back they are not as productive, but they play much better in the 2nd year back.

That said, Hartwell's knees are still a concern. As good as he is on run downs, he is a liability agains the pass. Still, it seems worth taking a flyer on the guy.

I think the knee surgery was just to clean up some scar tissue?

Middle linebacker Ed Hartwell, who missed the Atlanta Falcons' first five outings of the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgeries late in training camp to flush debris from both knees, will make his 2006 debut when he returns to the starting lineup.

Yea, that's about what I was thinking, but I didn't feel like looking for the story, lol.

thanks man..

Yea, and that's not that bad of a surgery, actually. he seemed to be fine at the end of '06 posting 14 tackles in week 16, and 7 tackles with one forced fumble in week 17. I think if NE signes Hartwell he'll put up some good numbers, and help the defense a lot.

if you look a the game by game situation with Hartwell in 2006. He was missing games in the early part of the season. About mid season he started to to play.

In the last quarter of the season, it appeared that he was the full time starter based on his tackles accumulated, So he took a year and half to recover from the Achilles tendon injury. That is about par for those that can come back.

I think the pats would like hartwell would like here on the cheap as a backup.

I'm guessing he's intrigued with the idea of playing here, but has hesitations because he wants a chance to play regularly.

I hope they can get him on board.
he'd provide great depth.
