They both receive my highest condiments.

Classy player who doesn't hotdog it.
If Pats do not pick up option in 2016 Mayo will then become an UFA and be eligible for 2017 comp pick calculations
Having all the leverage? In what way? Coming off two straight injury curtailed seasons doesn't exactly spell leverage to me, especially when Collins and Hightower played so well in his absence.Love that mayo took a very team friendly deal despite having all the leverage at this point.
I hope he is able to have a good year, and we keep him around for a few more after this one. He's not as crucial as he once was, what with hightower and collins taking huge steps up the last couple of years, but mayo is still a top tier LB in the league.
Do we get some immediate cap relief with this move ?
I wonder what the NFLPA thinks of such things?Somewhat concerned that NFL may disallow this in future but I believe a couple other well run franchises do this option move also, so perhaps it won't have the votes.

I figured those two implications. I was just wondering where the NFLPA actually stood on the matter, or if they would even take a stance.Mixed. Maybe it motivates clubs to cut vets but it also gets an extra new player drafted higher and paid more than he woulda been as a UDFA since the club gets > 7 picks that are paid higher than UDFAs.

Pretty much. Next year, the mysterious formula will change to exclude Revis, Wilfork, and Browner. It will be the newest example of the Patriots breaking a rule before the rule exists.Somewhat concerned that NFL may disallow this in future but I believe a couple other well run franchises do this option move also, so perhaps it won't have the votes.
