Two years ago the Patriots could have (sort of) taken either Patrick Chung or Delmas to fill a need at safety. At the time (based on the powerful scouting in my dime-store draft guide ) I thought Delmas was better. You all know how I feel about Chung now.

Alphonso Smith was another guy that looked really great in my dime store draft guide. Apparently Skippy and the Lions used the same guide. The Broncos traded their first round pick in 2010 in order to select him and then the Lions traded for him this year! Actually to be fair Smith was having a good season until be had the misfortune of playing a BB team.

well technically delmas was taken ahead of Chung....but i suppose would have been an option if we didn't keep trading down that year. ;)

Eugene Wilson was a safety, same as Patrick.
Eugene Chung was a Patriots, same as Patrick.

It all sort of fits together.

It's not over until we say it's over! Who's with me?

Does Fred from PFW live in Dartmouth? Because it was one of those guys who last made this mistake :lol2:

I don't know how old you are, but, take it from an older guy: You'll understand when you get older*. :)

Edit: As I hit the "send" button I realized you might not know who Eugene Chung is. High pick for Pats in '92.

*See, when you get older, you call new guys by the names of old guys with similar names. Well, you'll see ... In 20 years there'll be a Fred Brady and you'll call him "Tom" for the first three years.

Who the hell is Gene chung?

We drafted Patrick Chung. Get it straight. One guy is an up and coming young safety. The other player was one of the biggest 1st round busts in Pats history.

Re: Gene Chung verses Delmas and Alphonso Smith

Alright already! It was a hangover. Jeepers I know the difference between Eugene and Patrick. Eugene was from the Dark Ages of the Patriots.

Anyway to real issue is that P. Chung seems clearly superior to Delmas and post-draft evaluations (using dime-store draft guides) are usually way off the mark.

Delmas went 33 and Chung 34. The Patriots could have taken Alphonso Smith or Laurinaitis or Rey Maualuga instead of Chung so it would seem like the right pick.

However they picked Darius Butler instead of Jairus Byrd later in the round and everyone's binky Connor Barwin. I do not know how well the latter two have done but Byrd had a great rookie season.

The real issue is that the Patriots traded away #26 in the first round plus a 5 to get a second that they used for Butler. That 26 was used by Green Bay to select Clay Mathews.

Must be a real pain in the butt for some Patriots fans to see their draft binkies outperformed by the Patriots draft picks. The Pats have been on fire since 2008.

Re: Gene Chung verses Delmas and Alphonso Smith

Since the Pats took Chung they would not have taken Byrd. At the time Meriweather was envisioned as the team's FS and Chung was drafted to be a SS for us. I also didn't think we'd take Delmas even if he had lasted to 34because he's built more in the FS mold.

Now Butler vs Matthews is another discussion altogether however, the Pats didn't just get Butler. Nobody gives away a 1st round pick and doesn't get extras in return.

Please read the draft recaps to see what actually happened in the 2009 draft.:
New England Patriots' 2009 First Day Draft Recap | Bleacher Report
Patriots' 2009 Second-Day Draft Recap: Ellis Hobbles Out of New England | Bleacher Report

    1. They traded #23 to Baltimore for picks #26 and #163. Ravens took Oher.
    2. They traded #26 to Green Bay for picks #41, #73, and #83. Pack took Matthews.

    2009
    #41 Darius Butler CB
    #73 Traded for JAX 2nd round pick in 2010 = #44 of 2010 Draft
    #83 Brandon Tate WR

    2010
#44 + #190 traded to Raiders for #42 used to select Rob Gronkowski TE.

I think the #163 they got in 2009 negates the #190 they gave up in 2010 to move up for Gronk -- so essentially, would you rather have:
Claw Matthews or Butler, Tate, and Gronkowski is the FULL question.

I like Matthews a lot, don't get me wrong. But the Pats got 3 pretty good players out of that deal. And although Butler and Tate are still unproven, I think Gronk is a REAL DEAL player who could man the TE spot for the Pats at a very high level for years to come.

I am not going lie but i wanted Delmas last year and was :enranged: when Detroit picked him just before we selected Chung. But now, Chung seems like an excellent consolation.:) Where ws Delmas in Thursday Game? Brady made him seem invisible.

Yea, you have some company there as well. I was a pro delmas draft guy during that time. But as someone else pointed out he is more in the mold of a FS and merriweather is the guy there.

Besides the fact Chung is just a better football player. I'm happy I don't have to pull the trigger on draft day.

I'm pretty sure most people would rather Clay Matthews than Butler, Tate, and Gronk.

Re: Gene Chung verses Delmas and Alphonso Smith

No doubt. The probable defensive player of the year this year at our weakest position in 2009 and 2010.

William Moore is playing as well as Chung at strong safety and was drafted late in the second round.

Would have been sweet to get Denver's 2010 1st rounder for the Chung pick.

Maualuga could have helped last year in a big way, and freed up the pick we used on Spikes, who is only slightly better and equally limited to 1st and 2nd downs. Spikes played just 17 snaps vs Det.

Delmas is good, and Smith was released by Denver, not traded.

Not sure what the point of the original post was.
