I'm surprised this thread has gone on as long as it has. But it has gotten me to think about the range of empathy required by a situation like this one.
Let's face it, the vast majority of us have limited empathy for strangers other than a momentary e.xpression of sorrow before we move on with our day. There are literally millions of Syrians living in horrible conditions in refugee camps and millions more under direct fire. We all feel badly for them.....WHEN we think about it, but few actually act on that emotion.
I don't like Morten Anderson. I think he handled the deflategate fiasco particularly unprofessionally. I didn't mind about the initial report where it was clear he was being used by the Kensil Cabal. My dislike runs to the fact is that after he never repudiated what he KNEW for a certitude to be false. hat is not being a professional, or a man.
So when I heard about his illness, I'm pretty sure my reaction was similar to most people here. I immediately went from,.... "That's too bad"....., to "Karma's a *****",...... to "that's not right, I hope he gets well". It is all about the fact that while we are all good people, we all have a dark side that pops up, even if it's momentary.
Now after a day of reflection I have come to place where I feel about Mort that same way I would feel about ANY stranger that I heard got ill. That's too bad, I hope they recover.....and then pretty much not give it another thought. Does it seem cold? Perhaps. But raise your hand if you gave a single thought to the plight of those Syrian refugee in the past week other than as a campaign slogan.
In summary, Mort is pretty much a stranger to all of us. We don't like how he conducts his business and we are sad that he got sick (thought IIRC, he was a heavy smoker). That's about it. On to the next sad story...because there is always going to be one.
BTW- on second thought I have a selfish reason for wanting Mort to get healthy. I want him in top shape when he is deposed and has to give testimony in the Brady defamation suit. Does that make me a bad person.
