According to multiple reports, the NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed to set a ceiling of $208.2 million. If the cap were to get that high, it would represent a 14 percent increase over the 2021 season.

It would also represent a new high for the salary cap in NFL history. The 2019 season was played with a cap of $198.2 million, which would mark a jump of about eight percent and a significant reversal of what teams had to deal with this year.

Wow. Surprised it is that high, considering that last year's shortfall was to be spread out over three years.

Well, that’s the max.

If revenue is 100% back to normal this year (and with vaccines and the states’ trends so far, it might well be), the original projections prior to the pandemic was that 2022‘s cap would be in the $220m ballpark (2021 was originally projected pre-pandemic to be about 210m). Again, if everything is back to normal, why wouldn’t revenues be close to the pre-pandemic estimate?

By putting the limit on the actual 2022 cap, they’re basically paying the 2021 borrowed cap back early.... which will increase the 2023 and 2024 caps from what one would currently project it to be.

Paying it back as quickly as possible makes sense from an epidemiological standpoint. The scientists I've spoke with who tie pandemics to human incursions into natural systems say we should expect a COVID like pandemic every 3-4 years now. Vaccine speed will be faster with the advances in RNA but the distribution systems in high population density countries probably won't be. Smart business systems like the NFL should build this kind of disruption in to their forecasting, and make hay in the non pandemic years.

The Pats aren't in too bad of shape cap wise for 2022 when considering the numbers of players already signed.

OTC has the Patriots' 2022 cap space at $29,763,656 with 43 players signed, and they are currently 15th in cap space.
